Job description
Desertification and Land Degradation Assessment and Mapping
Action DESERT (http://desert.jrc.ec.europa.eu) is developing methodologies for assessment, mapping and economic valuation of land degradation contributing to EC and global environmental policies, implementation of international conventions, such as the UNCCD, and to the EC launched international initiative on the Economics of Land Degradation (ELD) as well as to the compilation of a new World Atlas of Desertification (WAD).

Within the frame of the current position, recently developed methods for assessing and mapping of land degradation will be tested and applied over Turkey, and/or other affected areas, in view of further improvements of the assessment schemes and to expand land degradation mapping to cover Turkey, and/or other affected areas, in view of contributing to assembling base data layers crucial for environmental policies and for complying with UNCCD reporting.

Economic valuation will then be implemented using further adapted stratifications such as the anthroscape approach developed by the Cukurova University. Derived experience and results will be of major value to the ELD initiative and be included as case study in the WAD.
