Department

Breakfast runs seven days a week from 0600-0915. It is broadcast on BBC ONE and the BBC News Channel. The Deputy Editors take a leading role in supervising the output of the programme as well as its longer term development and strategy.  Breakfast has a team of more than 50 journalists and support staff, working a 24/7 hour rota. The effective management of staff is one of the key responsibilities for the Deputies; they have responsibilities for rotas, appraisal, recruitment and training.

Role

This position is offered as a job-share opportunity, 3 days per week.
 
As Deputy Editor you are responsible for daily editorial oversight, both at the planning stage and during programme transmission. You are also expected to play a key role in developing and implementing long term programme strategy within the framework set by BBC News. Excellent people skills are required to lead a team of more than fifty people across a seven day a week rota.

Requirements

A considerable knowledge and practical experience of daily broadcast journalism including output editing, together with a strong interest in news and current affairs is essential. You will also need TV gallery experience and understanding and experience of breaking news techniques. You'll have a broad general knowledge and acute editorial judgement to be able to take sensitive decisions quickly and decisively. Creativity is essential; the programme has a desire to experiment with new production techniques. You will need a fluent command of the BBC’s policies in all relevant areas, along with strong interpersonal skills to deal effectively with reporters and presenters. You will also need strong leadership skills, to manage resources, staff and budgets in order to contribute to output in the most cost-effective manner.
