Mining Specialist / Mining Engineer IFC - International Finance Corporation - Washington, DC


Background / General description

The Mining Engineer will contribute to the strategic planning and execution of IFC’s involvement in the mining sector, fully participating in new business development, investment appraisal and portfolio supervision activities. As an industry specialist, the Mining Engineer will play an important role in helping IFC meet client needs, promote positive and sustainable development outcomes and thereby fulfill the Corporation’s broader mandate for poverty reduction. Although expected to bring strong technical skills to his/her work, the successful candidate must also have sufficient industry experience to exercise sound business and commercial judgment.

The position will be based in Washington DC.

Duties and Accountabilities

The successful candidate will:

• evaluate new exploration mining and smelting projects, conduct due diligence through desk review and site visits (significant travel is required to meet the job requirements).

• help supervise the existing investment portfolio.

• contribute to the formulation and implementation of strategic planning and business development for the IFC mining investments.

• in coordination with the technical team lead by the Chief Mining Engineer, take a lead role in compiling and disseminating relevant sector knowledge.

• keep abreast of current industry practice and advise IFC industry and regional staff on general industry trends and issues.

Selection Criteria

• Undergraduate degree in engineering or geology with emphasis on mining, mineral processing, or smelting. A post-graduate degree in a relevant area of specialization would be a plus.

• Broad experience (10 years+) in the mining industry combining operations, project development and consultancy to have a deep understanding of the interface between technology, operations management, technical parameters and financial viability of mineral projects.

• Familiarity with the metals mining industry is of particular advantage, as is working experience in emerging markets.

• Expertise in some of the following areas: ore reserves and mineral resources, mining techniques, mine planning, mineral processing, smelting and refining, project development, environmental and social considerations, cost estimation (capital and operating), project engineering and construction, feasibility studies, competitive positioning and benchmarking, and markets for metals and industrial minerals.

• Excellent communications skills, both written and verbal, in English; fluency in one or more of other major languages is a plus.

• Computer literacy is required.
