Description:

Karama seeks a Program Officer full-time at its Egypt Office to join our teamwork supporting NGO partners’ implementation of national campaigns and action plans, holding regional consultations and trainings, and facilitating advocacy at the international level using UN conventions and mechanisms. The main arenas of Karama’s partnerships and initiatives address violence against women, women’s political participation, women peace and security, constitutional reform for gender equality, and reform of laws discriminatory to women.

Organizational Profile:

Karama is a regional movement founded in 2005 working to build coalitions to end violence against women in all its forms, to reform or cancel discriminatory laws and practices, and to promote women’s advancement, security, and protection in all aspects of public and private life. With headquarters in Cairo, Egypt and a second office in Amman, Jordan, Karama works with hundreds of organizations across 14 countries in the Middle East and North Africa.
Karama amplifies solutions of local design and the voices of local women activists and experts to lead grassroots and community-supported advocacy campaigns. Karama engages women at the national and regional levels in dialogue, training, and knowledge-sharing in order to foster linkage, trust, and best practices upon which they can build capacity for joint collaboration to address shared priorities. At the international level, strategies and recommendations are amplified as guide for foreign investment and interventions in the region, and as a means to build support for implementing of international standards and conventions on women’s rights and human rights such as CEDAW, UN SCRs 1325 framework, the MDGs, and others.
Karama has contributed to reform and adoption of key laws over eight years including the adoption of Jordan’s domestic violence law in 2008 and the adoption of the zipper list in Libya in 2012, which directly resulted in women earning 16.5% of seats in the new Libyan assembly.

Qualifications:

  • Candidates must have a commitment to progressive change, great work ethic and professionalism.
  • Candidates must have a strong combination of communication skills and command over planning and monitoring (Logframes, results chains, baseline data collection).
  • Verbal, written, and research skills must be strong.
  • Successful candidates will have 2-4 years of project management or event planning experience as well as written and oral proficiency in languages including Arabic, English and French.
  • Some experience in fundraising from small and large institutions is preferred, or experience in grassroots field work.
  • Familiarity with Excel and PowerPoint is expected.
  • Knowledge of social media including Twitter is a plus, as well as experience with editing, translation and publication layout and design.
  • While the Program Officer is primarily based in Cairo, travel will be required on occasion.

Job Responsibilities:

Program Implementation
  • Support, monitor, and track partners’ development and implementation of national action plans and campaigns
  • Build the capacity of local partners through the provision of trainings or technical assistance to more effectively implement their programs
  • Contribute to campaign content, including writing analysis and policy recommendations, fact sheets, and other materials
  • Conduct research and writing assignments on different issues related to democratic development, international human rights mechanisms, and women rights
Preparation of Events and Delegations
  • Organize and coordinate the participation of Karama’s partners in international fora (Commission on the Status of Women, Association for Women’s Rights in Development, UN Universal Periodic Review, Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women)
  • Plan and coordinate regional consultations, trainings, and exchanges, including special Karama initiatives (Think Tank for Arab Women, Dignity Fund, Mahfoutha Prize, etc); includes concept notes, conference programme agendas, conference materials, participant logistics, and conference/workshop reports
Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation
  • Monitor, report and analyze program performance, with high level of rigor with tracking actuals vs. goals; Gather data with regard to performance indicators to feed into donor reports and other documentation and work to ensure all contract obligations are met.
  • Collaborate with staff in all areas of program management, including organizational work plans, monitoring and evaluation, project reports, and other programmatic reports needed for donors, and ensure that programs are in compliance with donors’ requirements 
  • Participate in planning calls and meetings with team members and partners on a regular basis
Fundraising, Public Speaking, and Communications
  • Network and develop relationships with new potential partners, donors, media, etc. Trouble shoot problems and/or complaints.
  • Plan and attend conferences, trainings, seminars etc. This includes travel within the region and occasionally international travel. Write and disseminate program and event reports
  • Contribute content and support to Karama’s communications and social media platforms as needed
