The role
Lead role in design and installation supervision of (i) power transmission systems, substations; and (ii) electro-mechanical plant for hydropower projects. The position will be based in SMEC's office in Kuala Lumpur, but will require travel from time-to-time to other SMEC offices and project sites. It is envisaged that the role will involve an equal amount of work in in both the Hydropower and Dams Group together with the Power and Energy Group, with about 60% time on projects, 20% on proposals and 20% on administration tasks.
Key Responsibilities
  • Lead electrical engineer, technical project management of electrical component of hydropower projects
  • Lead electrical engineer, technical project management of transmission and substation projects
  • Participation in proposal preparations and marketing activities
  • Review and Quality Assurance of technical input to projects to ensure compliance with SMEC BMS for execution of works and deliverables
  • Mentoring and guidance of graduate and new electrical engineers
  • Technical support and mentoring
  • Commercial awareness
  • Work closely with the management of SMEC and liaise with relevant managers
  • Strictly adhere to SMEC's business management system, quality management system and OSH procedures
  • Perform any other duties or other functions as directed.
Suitable applicants will have/be:
  • Recognised Electrical Engineering degree, Chartered Status
  • Minimum 15-20 years' experience in electrical engineering (preferably including transmission and distribution and/or hydroelectric power projects), preparation of feasibility and concept studies, tender and detail design and site supervision
  • Proficiency in:
    • Power system studies including short circuit, load flow, motor starting, transient and harmonics
    • Detailed single line diagram and schematic diagram (wiring diagram) design for LV and MV substations
    • Protection studies and design, including grading studies
    • Earthing and lightning protection system studies and design
    • Lighting system studies and design
    • Cabling system studies and design
    • DC and UPS system studies and design
    • SCADA system studies and design
    • Communication systems studies and design
  • Sound knowledge of relevant international standards including IEC, IEEE, etc
  • Ability to write effectively in English to furnish reports and to prepare business development materials including proposals
  • Demonstrated knowledge (and preferably use) of appropriate power software applications and design tools; for example PSS/E, CYME, ETAP
  • Ability to supervise the documentation, evaluation and implementation of the above
  • Demonstrated experience as project manager and team leader
  • Ability to develop good client relationships
  • Co-operative and flexible work style to accommodate workload and deadlines when required
  • Ability to work under pressure
  • Ability to provide technical guidance and mentoring to graduate engineering staff
  • Willingness to travel and work offshore from time-to-time at other SMEC offices and project sites
  • Willingness to learn new skills and acquire new knowledge.
  • Good knowledge of the national and regional power sector
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills to work effectively within a culturally diverse and multi-disciplinary environment
  • Sound knowledge of quality assurance procedures.
