Sex In Science Programme Co-ordinator

Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute.  Hinxton, UK.
Closing date: July 19, 2013.

Description:

23,225 to £37,525 depending on skills and experience
Fixed term contract until September 2016
The Sex in Science (SiS) Programme is a joint venture between the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute and the European Bioinformatics Institute: to raise awareness of issues affecting the 'leaky pipeline' of women in science; to address and challenge preconceptions; to inspire women and men at different stages of their scientific careers to progress to senior levels; and to foster constructive discussion and influence change to address these issues.
In addition, the Sanger Institute is now working on its first Athena SWAN award application, which will be submitted in July, and establishing an Action Plan to make changes and monitor their impact for an initial 3-year period.
To support these two exciting initiatives we are looking for a confident, pro-active and highly organised individual with an interest in diversity issues to support these two exciting initiatives.
The postholder will become an active member of both our SiS Working Group and Athena SWAN Self-Assessment Team, providing secretariat support and working with the Chair of both groups to identify, drive and influence change.  They will organise a range of events as part of our rolling campus SiS programme, produce and present statistics to monitor the impact of change and play a key role in staying abreast of developments in the area, networking externally to raise the profile of our work and help us to influence change at a national and international level. There may also be future opportunities to get involved with broader, ongoing diversity work at the Sanger Institute.

Essential Skills:

  • An interest and knowledge of diversity issues is a must, as is experience of analysing data, organising events and building good working relationships to get things done.

Ideal Skills:

  • Experience of providing secretariat support for meetings and working knowledge of Athena SWAN would be an advantage.
