Social Scientist: Gender and Sustainable Intensification, New Delhi, India

We are seeking an enthusiastic, pro-active, resourceful, and outcomes-oriented gender specialist to join our interdisciplinary team of scientists working to improve the livelihoods of resource-poor wheat and maize farmers in the developing world. As a member of the CIMMYT Socio-Economics Program, and in close collaboration with biophysical scientists and international and national partners, the successful candidate will undertake applied research on gender issues in relation to the sustainable intensification of wheat and maize-based farming systems and contribute to strengthening the institutional capacity for integrating gender in wheat- and maize research-for-development. The position is linked to key research-for-development projects in CIMMYT's South Asia portfolio, including the Cereal Systems Initiative for South Asia ( http://csisa.cimmyt.org ).

The position will be based in New Delhi, India, but will interact with all CIMMYT´s experimental stations and regional offices (country and world-wide) on a regular basis.
Specific duties of this position include:
- Expand the evidence base concerning the rapidly evolving roles, needs and constraints of men and women small-scale farmers in wheat- and maize-based systems in South Asia.
- Refine the understanding of different target groups in South Asia by developing structural and functional typologies that can inform design and implementation of research for development priorities to enhance social inclusiveness.
- Seek new pathways to improve the food and livelihood security of women farmers and other disadvantaged groups in South Asia, including emerging opportunities for entrepreneurship and strengthened support services for essential goods and services.
- Strengthen institutional capacity and further develop and consolidate the use of gender as an analytical tool to enhance targeting and impact of the work of CIMMYT and its partners in the region in alignment with the gender strategies of CRPs WHEAT ( http://wheat.org/gender-in-wheat ) and MAIZE ( http://maize.org/gender-in-maize ).
- Research for development to improve the documentation and understanding of gender issues in wheat- and maize-based farming systems in South Asia.
- Identification of gender transformative approaches in wheat and maize research and innovation systems.
- Design, implementation, monitoring and evaluation, and reporting of interventions to strengthen the incorporation of gender aspects in technology out-scaling processes.
- Contributions to institutional learning and change through networking and capacity strengthening for integration of gender issues in research at different levels in CIMMYT and among its partners.
We are seeking candidates with the following academic qualifications, skills and attitudes:
- PhD in Gender Studies, Development Studies, Social Anthropology, Rural Development Sociology, Human Geography, Development Economics or related fields.
- Minimum 5 years post-PhD relevant experience working with gender-and-agriculture issues in developing countries, particularly in South Asia (specific experience with small-scale entrepreneurship, mechanization/drudgery reduction, extension/technology diffusion, or adult learning/knowledge processes, will be an asset).
- Strong qualitative and/or quantitative analytical skills – and interest to apply both.
- Proven leadership-, interpersonal-, and cross-cultural skills, including ability to work with and motivate multi-disciplinary teams and to develop strong and effective working relationships with partners.
- Strong coordination and facilitation skills, including excellent written and oral communication skills in English.
- Established international publications record related to the position.
- Familiarity with project management concepts and gender responsive budgeting and planning is an added advantage.
The position is for an initial fixed-term contract of 2 years, after which further employment is subject to performance and the continued availability of funds.
