Amnesty , Business and Human Rights Legal Advisor

Central London

£41,124 per annum

We lead the way in tackling global human rights challenges. But we always want to do more. Our campaigning to uphold human rights in a range of contexts – particularly our work on Business and Human Rights standard-setting – needs the support of expert international legal analysis. Join us in this role and play a vital role in making a real difference.

About the role

A member of our global policy team, your time will be dedicated to providing legal advice in relation to our global campaigns for setting Business and Human Rights standards. Drawing on your knowledge of international human rights and business law, you’ll provide expert advice on issues related to companies breaking laws, causing or contributing to human rights abuses, in order to increase profit. From activists fighting for Shell to Clean-up the Niger Delta, to those calling for Vedanta to respect the Indigenous Rights in India, you’ll help Amnesty find ways to hold companies accountable for their actions. The rest of your time will involve providing advice to thematic or country teams within our organisation in order to create a legal basis for their campaigns. You may also represent Amnesty International (AI) at international meetings and participate in AI missions.

About you

Along with a professional legal qualification in at least one jurisdiction – or recognition as an outstanding professional international legal expert – you’ll have substantial practice of international law and extensive knowledge of corporate or economic law. To work closely with determined activists calls for sound political judgement combined with the confidence to push back as necessary. And in addition, your knowledge of the international landscape and the companies affecting human rights will be far-reaching. Beyond that, you’ll need excellent oral and written English; while a good working knowledge of French or Spanish is also desirable.

About us

Our aim is simple: an end to human rights abuses. Independent, international and influential, we campaign for justice, freedom and truth wherever they’re denied. Already our network of over three million members and supporters is making a difference in 150 countries. And whether we’re applying pressure through powerful research or direct lobbying, mass demonstrations or online campaigning, we’re all inspired by hope for a better world. One where human rights are respected and protected by everyone, everywhere.
