ENVIORNMENTAL HEALTH AND SAFETY (EHS) MANAGER, School of Science (SOS), to serve as EHS coordinator for the departments of Chemistry and Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences; and support the dean of the School of Science in ensuring that it meets the requirements of MIT's Environment, Health and Safety Management System (EHS-MS). Will work with MIT's EHS Office to implement the EHS-MS in each department; facilitate compliance with environmental health and safety laws and regulations (i.e., EPA, OSHA); facilitate compliance with MIT EHS best practices; generally recognize and understand the use of potentially hazardous materials (e.g., chemical/biological/radioactive hazards, lasers etc.); actively seek approaches, methods, and techniques to reduce or avoid the use of hazardous materials where appropriate and disseminate this information; evaluate whether all activities in the departments meet EHS requirements; conduct department-wide EHS inspections twice a year; ensure compliance with training course completion; provide training as needed; and answer EHS questions that arise. Will also coordinate the activities of the SOS EHS coordinators with the goal of delivering consistent and uniform service in all areas of EHS for each department, lab, and center (DLC); set the agenda for monthly meetings; and periodically review the performance of individual DLCs to ensure that EHS-MS requirements are being met.

REQUIREMENTS: a minimum of seven years' experience in the environmental health and safety field or related area; and knowledge of pertinent federal, state, and local EHS regulations. A B.S. in chemistry or an environmental, occupational safety, or science-related area strongly desired; as is professional certification in a related field, i.e., CIH, CHMM, CSP, etc. Ability to effectively communicate technically with chemists a must.
