Head of Cory Library

Cory Library at Rhodes University, one of South Africa's leading historical and cultural institutions, is possessed of unique heritage resources with special strengths in Eastern Cape and black intellectual history. Staffed by a dedicated and experienced team, the library now requires a permanent head to realize its vision of becoming a dynamic and living archive, serving Rhodes university, international scholarship and the community at large.


Purpose

To direct and coordinate the library and archival operations of the Cory Library. To provide archival services to Rhodes University, and information service in the field of Eastern Cape studies and related disciplines. To meet the needs of the University staff and students, but also of the wider community. To grow revenue by providing relevant services in the heritage sector.


Requirements

A Ph.D. degree in a relevant field (History, Sociology, Anthropology, Politics ),with a proven track record of publications, including some related to the Eastern Cape PLUS 1 years relevant experience;

OR

A 3 year Library Degree, plus 1 year Post-graduate Library Diploma or an appropriate Archival qualification or equivalent (i.e. 4 years of study) PLUS 7 years relevant experience

OR

A 3 year Library Degree or an appropriate Archival qualification PLUS 8 year of relevant experience.

Relevant experience includes: -

  • Previous experience in a computerized academic or research library or archive library
  • Knowledge of languages commonly spoken in the Eastern Cape will be an advantage
  • Previous experience working at management level including having managed and supervised staff
  • Previous exposure to IT applications and electronic library and information tools
  • Previous archive experience will be an advantage
