TRANSLATORS (3 POSTS)

The Southern African Development Community (SADC) was established in 1980 and is a grouping of fifteen Southern African and Indian Ocean States with the common vision of ensuring economic well being, improvement in the standards of living and quality of life, freedom, social justice and peace and security for the people of Southern Africa.

SADC is currently undergoing a transformation process, the main purpose of which is to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of SADC policies and programmes, through a more coherent and better coordinated strategy. A Regional Indicative Strategic Development Plan (RISDP) has been adopted to guide the process of deepening regional integration and cooperation and its implementation started in 2005.

The SADC Secretariat invites qualified, experienced and result-oriented applicants who are citizens of SADC to apply for the following positions in the SADC Secretariat. All positions are based at the SADC Headquarters in Gaborone, Botswana:

Directorate of Human Resources and Administration

Position Job Grade
1. Translator- Portuguese 7
2. Translators French (2 Posts) 7

Job Summary

The main purpose of these positions is to translate relevant official SADC documents.

Reporting Lines

The position holders will report to the Senior Translators-Portuguese or French, as the case may be.

Task Description

  • Translate relevant documents into required language e.g. French to English/English to French or Portuguese to English/ English to Portuguese.
  • Coordinate the work of freelance translators and interpreters
  • Compile glossaries
  • Undertake relevant research
  • Prepare documents for official SADC meetings and technical papers for discussion, dissemination and publication

Competences

  • Good analytical skills and capacity of systemic thinking in complex politico-administrative structures
  • Excellent Computer skills
  • Excellent communication and facilitation skills in English or French or Portuguese.

Qualifications and Skills

Education

  • University Degree in Translation/Interpreting or
  • University Degree in Linguistics/Literature or Humanities plus Specialization in Translation/Interpreting
  • A Masters Degree in a relevant field is an added advantage

Experience and Other Qualifications

  • Three (3) years post qualification experience as translator in public or private sector organizations (including Non –Governmental Organizations' (NGOs)

Or

  • University Diploma in Humanities plus five (5) years proven experience as translator in public or private sector organizations (including NGOs)
  • University Degree in any other field plus five (5) years proven experience as translator in public or private sector organizations (including NGOs)

Or

  • University Degree or Diploma in Humanities plus ten (10) years proven experience as freelance translator

Tenure of Appointment

All positions are on a two (2) year-contract renewable based on satisfactory performance.

Remuneration

The SADC Secretariat offers competitive package for all the positions as per detailed below Average package.

Job Grade Average Package per Annum
Job Grade 7 US$ 88,396
