Wetland/Wildlife Field Ecologists & Assistants Central NY

Temporary Assignment

B&L is seeking Wetland/Wildlife Field Ecologists and Field Assistants for a temporary assignment of 2-3 months with an approximate start date of mid-March to early April. The primary focus of this assignment will be to identify and delineate wetlands in Central NY. Candidates must have:

  • B.S. in Environmental Science, Natural Resources, or related field
  • Experience in conducting freshwater wetland delineations in the Northeast using the 2009 Northcentral/Northeast Regional Supplement to the 1987 U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Wetland Delineation Manual
  • Strong plant, hydric soil, and wetland hydrologic identification skills
  • Experience with survey-grade handheld GPS units
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; ability to work successfully and productively in collaborative field teams and courteously engage landowners
  • Ability to hike long distances on uneven, potentially steep terrain, carrying up to 30 lbs of equipment
  • Availability and enthusiasm for working 12-hour days, 6 days per week, in all types of weather
  • Valid driver’s license

Field Ecologists must have 3-5 years experience in delineation and identifying and classifying ecological cover types and rare/threatened/endangered species’ habitats. They will lead field teams in identifying and delineating jurisdictional wetlands and will be responsible for accurately determining the field location boundaries in accordance with federal protocol. They will also identify and map ecological cover types and potential habitats for threatened and endangered species. Additional responsibilities include project coordination and client liaison; maintenance of field data, equipment, and materials; and employee safety supervision.

Field Assistants must have relevant delineation coursework or training and/or 1-2 years delineation experience. They will assist Field Ecologists in identifying and delineating wetlands; identifying and mapping ecological cover types and habitats; recording field data; maintaining field equipment and supplies; and other duties as assigned. Compensation is commensurate with qualifications and experience. No insurance or time off benefits are provided; the only benefit is the unmitigated joy of working long days in the field. Possibility of assignment extension if workload necessitates.
