Call for Candidates for DST/NRF SARChI Research Chair

The aim of the South African Research Chairs Initiative (SARChI) is to strengthen scientific research leadership and capacity in South African universities, in order to strengthen the development of a knowledge-based economy in South Africa. The University of the Western Cape (UWC) was awarded a number of Tier 1 Research Chairs and is hereby calling for candidates to fill this prestigious position for the following Chair:

Microbial Genomics

The Research Chair will be expected to drive a very strong research agenda through the acquisition of national and international research funds, postgraduate training and supervision and high impact publications. The incumbent will also be expected to play a leading role in the Institute of Microbial Biotechnology and Metagenomics (IMBM). The SARChi chair will be housed in the new 1200m2 IMBM laboratory complex, a fully equipped facility for modern molecular biology and genomics research. Genomics research at UWC benefits from the recent acquisition of a Roche GS Junior Next Generation DNA sequencing facility. Applicants should be able to demonstrate a high level of international recognition for their research in an appropriate sub-field of microbial genomics (including microbial ecology, metagenomics, microbial physiology, industrial microbiology).

Core functions: • research and innovation activities (publications and presentations) • supervision of postgraduate students • securing external research funding • development of research capacity within the institution.

Requirements: • a research scholar with an international reputation as a leader in the particular field • excellent track record of postgraduate supervision and mentorship • willingness to enter into a contract for five years, which is renewable to another five or ten years up to a maximum of fifteen years, based on performance.
