The Natural History Unit is the world leader, creating output from Africa to Springwatch, from Andy's Wild Adventures to the Natural World.

Reporting to the Head of Natural History Unit the Development Lead will be responsible for the running of the development process across the Natural History Unit. You will work with other members of the senior team to ensure the Natural History genre maintains its reputation for excellence whilst increasing the ambition and innovation of its ideas.

Role

As Development Lead you’ll contribute to an over-arching creative development policy that inspires and enables the production of excellent content across all platforms, lead the Unit’s Development team and drive the consistent delivery of fresh, original and high quality ideas to commissioning ensuring the needs of the commissioners and audience are met.

You will liaise with the NHU Strategy team in delivering the development operation that meets their needs, liaise with channel and content heads across the BBC to ensure the One BBC strategies are reflected and implemented within the genre as well as plan a development approach that takes into account the commercial awareness of the NHU.

In order to manage successful development outcomes you’ll harness creative talent, take responsibility for scheduling and monitoring progress of all development priorities and be aware of future trends both inside and outside of the BBC.

Requirements

You will have experience of leading in the delivery of creative output across multiple genres and platforms which will require you to possess strong communication, interpersonal, negotiation and people management skills

You will have excellent knowledge and understanding of the international market, co-production and commercial opportunities in all media, production and post-production on all platforms, as well as an understanding of the deviser target audiences’’ expectations.

To be successful you will have credibility with Commissioner’s and Controllers with the ability to work with both internal and external creative partners.
 
NOTES FOR CANDIDATES
Those candidates selected for an interview should expect to bring 2 ideas along for BBC One 2014 slots - one mid range and one low price point.

Low price point -
8pm slot BBC 1 - budget of £250k ph - production time 9 months.
Poppy, broad, tabloid single or two parter - archive based - explores the natural world through an accessible BBC ONE lens.

Mid Range -
8pm slot BBC 1- budget of £500k ph - production time 18months.
Stunt / event show - featuring big box office BBC ONE animals that will make an impact in the schedule.

Shortlisted candidates will be asked to pitch these ideas as part interview process.
It is expected that interviews will be held week commencing 4th March, but this date may be subject to change.
