Department

BBC Learning, established in 1924, is at the heart of the BBC’s overall aim to inform, educate and entertain. It’s our mission to inspire a life full of learning for all our audiences. As a department we play a central part in meeting the BBC's purpose of promoting education and learning.  We co-commission a substantial portfolio of programmes and produce a range of learning resources delivered online, on-air and through face-to-face activities that connect, create and magnify powerful opportunities across the entire BBC to inspire all audiences. Recent successful collaborations have been with Stargazing Live, Blue Peter’s Olympic Torch Relay, CBeebies Rhyme Rocket, R1’s Hackney Academy, CBeebies Mr Bloom and The One Show. The department is also home to a comprehensive specialist learning offering that includes key brands such as Bitesize, Skillswise, and Class Clips.

Role

The Lab is a media literacy production unit that gives members of our audiences the opportunities and skills to make BBC content. This post is primarily to work on FRESH, a collaboration with BBC3, to provide a platform for new factual film-makers, showcasing their work and giving them advice on how to develop their skills. The Lab will set up the platform, deliver an awareness campaign, commission content to inspire film-makers, curate the content, bring in production talent to engage in critiques of the films and oversee the production of a television programme made up of the films for broadcast on BBC Three.
The Lab requires a researcher with a passion for short form documentary to be involved in the project, from the initial scoping and brief writing, to running the campaign and setting up the channel. It will require someone with excellent communication skills, a sound track record in research, good editorial judgment and an understanding of the technical challenges this project will bring.

Requirements

You will be an experienced researcher with a sound track-record of working in a factual production environment. You will also need to demonstrate that you understand the editorial challenges of broadcast television.
