Law School Interim Sustainability Manager, Harvard University


Sustainability efforts have been underway on the Harvard campus for decades, and today sustainability is a key University priority led by the Office for Sustainability (OFS) in partnership with the administration and faculty, students, and staff across the Schools and units.

Harvard is consistently ranked as one of the top campus sustainability programs in the country (Princeton Review and Sierra Club rankings), and was one of the first such programs when the first office was formed in 2000. Our goal is to lead the University in achieving its sustainability goals and to capitalize on the legacy of learning and discovery at Harvard by using the campus as a living laboratory for sustainability best practices. Position Overview:

We are looking to fill a Temporary position (~4 months) to cover the Law School Sustainability Program Manager position while on short term leave, starting on July 29th. This position is managed by the Office for Sustainability and funded by the Harvard Law School to initiate, implement, and manage campus conservation programs.

The major activities of this program are education, outreach and publicity for environmental sustainability initiatives; running conservation campaigns and working with students, staff, and faculty to reduce campus environmental impacts; accounting for and reporting conservation projects on campus; and ongoing research to support best practices for waste, energy, and water conservation efforts on campus.

The position will have primary office space at the Law School.

Duties & Responsibilities:

The Law School Interim Sustainability Manager will work closely with OFS and the HLS administrative departments & especially with Facilities Management, this includes:

Maintain the student Green Living Program & staff Green Team:

Green Living Program (student)

Manage 6 student employees to ensure informative emails are going out to their communities in a timely manner & other planned activities are moving forward effectively;
Book meeting rooms & schedule meetings on student calendars;
Ensure the Senior Green Living Rep is being supported w/ administrative needs (i.e. sending out calendar appointments, books rooms, buying supplies, doing expense reports, etc.);
Coordinate with the OFS Budget Administrator to ensure student purchasing needs are being handled (i.e. filling out and submitting expense reports, paying invoices); and
Coordinate with the Harvard Recycling Manager to set up a waste audit for the fall semester (i.e. work with student schedules and Recycling Managers' schedule to determine best time for waste audit, etc.).
Green Team Program (staff)

Book meeting room space and schedule meetings on staff calendars;
Manage the HLS Green Team email listserv (i.e. respond to questions, appropriately forward emails to the Green Team members for follow up, send event and meeting updates); and
Ensure the Lead Green Team member and Green Team Subcommittees are being supported (i.e. paying invoices for food or other materials, ordering marketing materials, booking rooms, drafting & sending reminder emails, tabling events).
Maintain HLS Facilities Sustainability Outreach & provide general support to the Facilities Team:

Distribute information about university temperature policy, help Facilities to enforce the temperature as needed;
Maintain the sustainability@law.harvard.edu email address, appropriately and in a timely manner respond to emails & questions from the community; and,
Maintain the Sustainability Program Manager phone, appropriately & in a timely manner respond to voice messages & phone calls from the community.
Maintain other key programs and sustainability priorities:

Green Office Program: serve as a Green Office Liaison, working with OFS, respond to Green Office inquires & help offices with the initial stages of the program (there will be specific Green Office training to complete this);
Promote the OFS Green Tip: hang up Green Tip posters, distribute posters and messaging via email, ensure Green Living Reps promote to their dorms, and ensure that Green Team members hang posters in their offices;
Freecycles: help to coordinate Freecycles on campus, work with Recycling Manager and the Faculty of Arts and Science Green Living Program to promote a combined Freecycle event. Book the space for the event, develop marketing materials, distribute marketing materials, help w/ the coordination of delivering donated supplies/materials to the event, help with set up and cleanup of event; and, TerraCycle Brigades & Donation Centers: regularly check donation centers and TerraCycle boxes for bin fullness and quality, coordinate with Recycling Manager to remove full bins.
Identify, initiate, support, & institutionalize resource conservation policies & operations by working with a wide variety of stakeholders at HLS including:

Facilities management, IT groups, food dining services, events, custodial services, student & faculty affairs, students groups, department admins, etc.

Maintain HLS sustainability reporting and communications:
Ensure the continued publicity of HLS' sustainability efforts through web, press releases, newsletters, etc. (i.e. take pictures at events, write articles, work w/ OFS communications to publish online); and
Serve as primary contact point for internal and external questions & requests for information including campus sustainability questions, suggestions and feedback from the campus community, & media requests.


Basic Qualifications:

BA/BS required and 2-3 years of experience in environmental management or environmental education with strong communications experience preferred;
Experience in campus (or other institution) sustainability or institutional change desired;
Demonstrated interest in and knowledge of environmental sustainability issues, green building, energy conservation, recycling, etc.;
Excellent communication and outreach skills;
Proven organizational skills and attention to detail needed;
Ability to work independently and as a team member, and ability to manage multiple projects;
Demonstrate excellent customer service and responsiveness to client and community needs;
Ability to build relationships among diverse groups of stakeholders including graduate students, administrative staff, faculty and school leadership and custodial/operations staff;
High degree of flexibility, adaptability and general ability to respond to emerging opportunities and barriers in a constantly changing environment;
Must be positive, creative, and enthusiastic; and
Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Publisher.


Technology Skills Required:

Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Publisher is required;
An ability to learn Harvard systems and web software quickly is a requirement; and
Additional Qualifications Basic web and/or graphic design abilities a plus.
