Policy Adviser

Work at the heart of government.
The Treasury is the economics and finance ministry for the UK. Working here offers a unique insight into some of the most important issues currently facing the country – and provides invaluable experience that’s relevant to a huge range of careers within government or the private sector. Our Policy Advisers get involved in an enormous variety of different policy areas – from tax and economic development to international trade treaties and providing vital support to Ministers.
What you’ll do
As a Policy Adviser, you’ll develop expertise within a specific area of economic or financial policy and projects – anything from banking regulation to health spending, or to how individuals are taxed. Once you’ve applied successfully, we’ll assess your strengths and allocate a policy area in which you’ll be able to specialise. After around 18 months, you will be able to move role in order to broaden or deepen your experience.
There’s a huge range of areas and issues you could become involved in. Too many, in fact, to list here. However day-to-day, your role is likely to include:
  • Researching, analysing and evaluating complex data and using this to develop or enhance policy ideas
  • Writing briefings for Ministers and senior managers
  • Responding to written questions from MPs and members of the public
  • Working with other government departments and organisations to debate and shape policy
  • Managing projects
Your skills and experience
HM Treasury Policy Advisers come from a wide range of backgrounds. We value an analytical mind, the ability to see the bigger picture, and excellent verbal and written skills more than any specific economics or finance background. So as long as you have a minimum 2:1, your degree can be in any discipline. We welcome people who also have a Masters in economics.
These important roles come with early responsibility. To make sure that you are ready for the challenges which come with them, we’ll make sure you enjoy a structured learning and development programme which includes a mix of formal and informal learning, plus direct support from your manager and a significant amount of knowledge sharing and coaching from a variety of colleagues.
