Location:                                  This position will be based either at Fauna & Flora International’s office in Cambridge, UK, with regular travel to West Africa or will be based in the West Africa region.

Working closely with local partners, FFI’s Africa Programme currently operates in 14 countries in West, Central, East and Southern Africa, and is implementing a range of projects focused on species and habitat conservation, biodiversity planning, protected area management, institutional development and capacity building, sustainable use and community-focused wildlife management initiatives. A substantial part of the Africa Programme is devoted to the conservation of forests of high biodiversity value in the Upper and Lower Guinean forest ecoregions of West Africa.

We are seeking a highly motivated, experienced and resourceful individual to join FFI’s Africa team to reinforce our programme of work in West Africa. You will be responsible for managing our existing projects located in the Upper and Lower Guinean Forest ecoregions of West Africa (including Guinea, Sierra Leone and Cameroon), including project development, fund-raising and coordination with in-country partners, and supervision and management of in-country staff.

With a minimum UK Master’s degree or equivalent level qualification in biodiversity conservation or a related science / social science, you will have specific experience developing and managing protected areas and landscapes, as well as experience working in partnerships with government, NGOs and/or the private sector in pursuit of individual and shared conservation objectives.

With a strong background in programme management and development, and proven success in fundraising, you will also take the lead in developing project concepts and proposals and securing funding for new areas of work. You will have experience engaging with donors, building and maintaining relationships, and reporting on and evaluating outcomes.  With excellent leadership and organisational skills, you will provide on-going coordination and support to in-country projects, staff and partners and will enjoy working in a dynamic environment where the ability to respond swiftly to changing organisational and team needs is paramount.  

Strong experience in management of conservation and development programmes and in administrative and financial management is essential and an accounting or financial management qualification or experience will be a distinct advantage, as would previous experience working in an NGO environment or in Africa.  Fluent written and spoken English is essential.  A good working knowledge of written and spoken French is also essential and fluency desirable.
