Associate Editor, Politics

Editorial | Washington DC, DC, United States

The msnbc.com Politics team seeks a motivated, proactive and savvy associate editor. This job requires strong editing and writing skills, with at least 2-3 years of prior professional experience in an online and/or television newsroom. Please be prepared to share non-student work you’ve written, produced, or edited.

The associate editor will work within the NBC News Washington Bureau – selecting, editing, and producing political content from msnbc.com reporters, network contributors, the wire services, and an array of partner sites. The right candidate will have a firm grasp of current political events and a developed editorial sense - skills that will enable him/her to prioritize stories and design page fronts appropriately. The associate editor also directs a substantial amount of communication between the various msnbc.com bureaus (Redmond, Wash., New York, and London), so experience managing editorial requests and pacing tasks accordingly is required.

The position demands previous proficiency in AP Style, an ability to write exceptional headlines/captions, and a willingness to go above and beyond the call of duty when breaking news beckons.

In addition to handling daily and breaking news, the associate editor will also manage interactive projects and assist reporters with fact checking. Prior research experience is preferred. A knack for layout and design, a thorough understanding of the intersection between television and news on the web, and familiarity with CMS systems are also required.

Candidates should expect to successfully complete writing and current events tests.
