The Faculty of Humanities requires the services of a dynamic person of proven academic stature and relevant management experience to lead the Department of Social Work and Criminology.

Responsibilities:
The successful incumbent will be responsible for:
• The strategic, academic and operational management of the Department;
• Promoting the Department’s research profile, good academic education and professional training;
• Playing an active role as academic leader of the discipline at national and international levels;
• Fundraising for departmental activities.

Minimum requirements:
• A Doctorate in Social Work;
• Registration with the South African Council for Social Service Professions;
• Academic status in the relevant discipline;
• A proven research and publications record;
• A proven postgraduate supervision track record;
• Experience in high-level liaison with internal and external stakeholders and professional bodies;
• An appropriate vision for the Department;
• Internal recognitions;
• Strong leadership and communication skills.

Recommendations:
• Managerial experience at a tertiary institution;
• A strong research record in one of the department’s research specialisation fields;
• NRF rating.

Although the headship is a fixed- term appointment for four years, external candidates will be considered for permanent appointment as associate professor or professor. Preference will be given to the incumbent for re-appointment for a second term.
