Senior Associate Scientist - Crop Breeding Information Management

The successful candidate will lead research and development activities to design, implement and deploy rice breeding information management systems, which is to be an extension of functionality of the International Crop Information Systems (ICIS; www.icis.cgiar.org)
The IRRI Breeding Informatics Team is working with the GRiSP partners and partners in the ICIS communities to design, implement, test, and support a common International Rice Information Systems (IRIS). The incumbent will directly supervise the ICIS software engineering team. He/She will also contribute toward the development of related germplasm information systems in the area of genetics resources management and genomic characterization.
Major accountabilities/Responsibilities
1. Lead IRRI's ICIS research and development activities including enhancement of the ICIS database schemata, user interfaces and the development of new application modules to meet the stakeholder requirements for the capture, processing, and visualization of germplasm pedigree, phenotype, genotype and related data.
• Collaborate with IRRI scientists and data managers to design, implement, test, and support ICIS applications for effective germplasm data management
• Collaborate with the international GRiSP partners to specify and implement a strategy for IRIS
• Develop modules and programs for system and data integrity checking of ICIS and other needed information systems
• Supervise software engineers involved in developing crop breeding information systems

4. Contribute significantly to an institute-wide approach and implementation for managing primary research data
Qualification requirements
• MS in Computer Science
• Minimum 10 years of experience in relevant areas of crop or plant research and team work environment including:
- Knowledge of computer programming, database development and experience in implementing a broad range of tools for scientific data management
- Familiarity with molecular biology in particular relating to crops/plants
- Experience in conducting informatics training to non-specialists
