This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a new, ambitious initiative to establish an independent Global Ocean Commission (GOC) made up of internationally recognised leaders who will identify the main threats to the high seas and develop recommendations to address them, acting as a catalyst for improvements that are critical for a healthy marine environment worldwide and for the billions of people who depend on that environment for their livelihoods and well-being. The GOC will be based at Somerville College, one of 38 independent, self-governing colleges of the University of Oxford.

The Director of Global Engagement will develop, direct and implement global engagement and outreach strategies with the goal of promoting the work of the Commission. By designing innovative engagement strategies and identifying opportunities to convene diverse constituencies, the Director of Global Engagement will build relationships with key stakeholders to achieve buy-in and support for the recommendations of the Commission. Constituencies include policy-makers, scientists, non-governmental organizations, a broad range of industries and sectors that have impact on the marine environment, fisheries management organizations and enforcement agencies. This role requires extensive experience in the international policy arena, working directly with senior government officials, policymakers and non-governmental organizations, ideally with experience in political campaigns. An undergraduate degree in political science, public policy, international relations, business, economics, or related field is required, a master’s degree is preferred, with commensurate experience in government, business, or a non-governmental organization. Direct experience either in Asia, Africa or Latin America is strongly preferred.

This position is based in Oxford, United Kingdom, reporting to the Executive Secretary of the Commission.

The successful candidates must be willing to travel. Must be fluent in English, plus fluency in other languages desirable. A competitive salary, commensurate with experience, plus generous pension scheme and vacation allowance is offered. This is a fixed term post for a period of 2 years in the first instance.
