Director (D-2), Plant Production and Protection Division
at its headquarters in Rome, Italy.


Responsibilities: Reporting to the Assistant Director-General, Agriculture and Consumer Protection Department, the Director oversees and facilitates the design and evolution of strategies for sustainable crop production intensification (SCPI), of policies, methodologies and field projects in crop production and protection and crop-sector analysis; provide leadership and vision for the development and implementation of the Organization’s SCPI strategy; exercise overall management responsibility including planning for the Division’s program of work, ensuring quality control, progress monitoring as well as the cost-effective use of financial and human resources as per Results Based Management principles; promote efforts for resource mobilization from donors in support of the Division’s priority activities; lead and/or support inter-agency and inter-institutional collaboration on FAO’s crop sector strategy and provide guidance to private sector and civil society organizations, FAO Members, UN and specialized agencies, and other global, regional and national bodies; represent the Organization at high-level meetings and other events relevant to the Division’s mandate.

Requirements: Advanced University Degree in crop production or health. Additional qualifications in broader agricultural sciences and international agriculture and/or Ph.D. in crop sciences would be an asset. Demonstrated professional competency and mastery of crop production and protection related subject matters dealt with by the division. Proven leadership of high order in relevant activities, programs or institutions in the public or private sectors. Experience with multilateral negotiations, advice to governments and with program/project fund acquisition. Working knowledge of English, French or Spanish and a limited knowledge of one of the other two or Arabic or Chinese or Russian, the languages of the Organization. Ability to lead and effectively work with people of different national and cultural backgrounds in an international setting.
