WWF-CARPO, Marine and Coastal Programme Coordinator

Marine and Coastal Programme Coordinator located in Gamba.

In close coordination with WWF partners and using the experience and lessons learnt from the WWF Marine programme over the last year in Gabon. This Programme aligns with the conservation strategy for WWF in Gabon and the regional WWF conservation strategic plan (Green Heart of Africa – GHOA), deriving from WWF’s Global Programme Framework.

Major functions:

  • Set up and supervise the delivery of the Gabon marine & coastal programme;
  • Reinforce WWFs role in marine work in Gabon by improving and further building on the marine and coastal monitoring and survey programme in the Gamba Complex. This in close collaboration with key stakeholders including WCS, the Smithsonian Institution, Ibonga and the Marine Turtle Partnership;
  • Improve the marine protected area network in Gabon and its buffer zones;
  • Coordinate research of coastland freshwater ecosystems to develop sound management measures. This includes also the rivers and lagoons and data collection from observers on fishing boats.
  • He/she will be responsible for programme development and implementation, including lobbying with the government and donor advocacy; strategizing and analyzing the legal frameworks; relationship with partners, donors, government, private sector and civil society; communication; report and proposal writing, fundraising.

Selection criteria

Languages: Fluency in both French and English
Required qualifications and experience

  • MSc degree or higher in the field of marine sciences or relevant environmental disciplines;
  • Additional academic training or a degree in a management field would be a strong asset;
  • Broad working experience and good knowledge of fisheries, marine and coastal management in Africa, D Proven track record in successfully developing, leading, and managing projects in the field of marine conservation, fisheries and natural resource management,
  • At least 10 years overall professional experience, of which at least 5 years in Africa, working, in a senior management position on a major conservation programme.
  • Proven experience on engaging with actors at a high level - corporate and government;
  • Strong understanding of sustainable fisheries, fisheries governance and MPAs
  • Experience in proposal writing and fundraising,
  • Excellent negotiation, diplomacy and lobbying skills,
