The Caribbean Development Bank (CDB or the Bank) has a great opportunity for a General Counsel (GC) who will provide strong and visionary leadership and effective management and oversight of the Bank’s Legal Department.

CDB is a regional multilateral development bank which is committed to the harmonious economic growth and development of its member countries in the Caribbean and to promoting economic cooperation and integration among them, having special and urgent regard to the needs of its less-developed members. CDB is the premier vehicle for development financing in the Region.

The Role

The GC will report to the Vice-President (Corporate Services) and Bank Secretary, and will be accountable for the provision of legal services, advice and counsel as principal legal advisor to the Bank, so that the Bank in the conduct of its affairs is in compliance with its Charter and international and municipal law. The position will also be accountable for managing the Bank's Legal Department and ensuring that the negotiations and drafting of all Bank agreements are in compliance with relevant law and regulations and that the Bank's activities are conducted in accordance with its existing or appropriate policies, rules and procedures. The GC will be responsible for the overall coordination and formulation of the Bank’s position on legal issues. He/she will also provide intellectual leadership in devising solutions to enable CDB to meet its many development objectives and challenges in a rapidly evolving environment, within the framework of the Agreement establishing the Bank (the Charter) and its policies. The GC will be a member of the Advisory Management Team and as such will provide perspectives on the Bank’s strategy and initiatives and will serve on the Bank’s management committees.

The Candidate

  1. The eligible candidate should be a qualified Attorney-at-Law, Barrister or Solicitor as evidenced by relevant qualification and ability to practise in one or more of CDB’s member countries.
  2. Eligible candidates should have at least 15 years working experience in the practice of law in the private and/or public sector in one or more of CDB’s member countries, with at least eight years mentoring or guiding a team. Working experience in the practice of law in one or more of CDB’s BMCs would be an advantage.
  3. The successful candidate must be willing to live and work in Barbados.
