Research Assistant

ONE is a campaign and advocacy organization backed by over three million people from around the world and every walk of life who are committed to the fight against extreme poverty and preventable disease, particularly in Africa. We hold world leaders to account for promises made, and we press them to support policies in development policy and finance, transparency and governance. We also work with leaders in Africa to support greater democracy, accountability and transparency. ONE operates from Berlin, Brussels, Johannesburg, London, Paris and Washington DC.

We are looking for a Research Assistant to join our team in London. The Research Assistant will work as part of the Global Policy team to provide primary and secondary research on a broad range of policy topics. This will include researching and writing on ONE’s key policy areas such as global health, agriculture/food security, transparency and accountability, private sector development, trade, and investment. The position will entail a balance between supporting immediate requirements and helping to develop ONE’s policy positions on medium- and long-term strategic issues.

The ideal candidate will be a great team player who is sympathetic to ONE’s issues and is able to handle a varied and fast paced role. S/he is familiar with international development issues and has a strong and demonstrable interest in Africa.

Reports to: Policy Manager, Publications & Research. This position will also have a dotted line report to the Director of Agriculture & Europe Policy

Location: London

Principal duties and responsibilities
• Conduct quantitative and qualitative research in support of ONE’s global policy objectives and priorities.
• Provide research support for the production of weekly and time sensitive briefings as well as flagship policy publications.
• Build and enhance ONE’s policy fact database and document library ensuring that they include the most up-to-date information available.
• Read and digest relevant policy reports and media coverage of specific issues and provide summary analysis on content and tone.
• Attend policy-relevant seminars and workshops, and consolidate relevant information for consumption by the policy team.
• Represent ONE at meetings and conferences on specific policy topics, as needed.
• Any other duties as appropriate to the role.

Skills and competence required for the role (candidates should demonstrate how their experience meets these in their application):
• Bachelor’s degree, preferably in economics, international affairs, finance, or another relevant development-related field.
• Excellent research, writing, and analytical skills. Strong quantitative and Excel skills are essential.
• Quick turnaround research skills – must have the ability to seek out key facts and statistics that help explain complicated policy topics to broad audience.
• Ability to synthesise policy documents with an eye for key points and relevance to ONE’s issues
• Ability to work to tight deadlines and produce research briefings with sometimes very short notice.
• Familiarity and understanding of international development issues and interest or experience in Africa strongly preferred.
• Very well-organized and a proven ability to multi-task.
• Ability to work in a fast paced environment, with shifting priorities and occasional heavy workloads.
• Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively in a team environment.
