The EIB, the European Union’s bank, is seeking to recruit for its Secretariat General and Legal Affairs Directorate (SG-JU), at its headquarters in Luxembourg:

Finance Lawyers for loan restructuring, new financial instruments and equity investment activities

Appointments will be made on the basis of a 3-5 year fixed term contract

This is a preliminary campaign in order to create a reserve list for anticipated future vacancies.
Applicants will undergo an initial screening and short-listed candidates will then be held in reserve for up to one year, during which time they may be called for interview and selected for specific vacant posts

Purpose

The successful candidates will provide legal support to the operational Directorates, carrying out work relating to all tasks within the Division's remit: restructuring and distressed loans, new products implemented by the Bank and direct or indirect equity investments. They will also be involved in the contractual policy aspects of the Division

Operating Network

The lawyers will act under the authority of the Head of Division in cooperation with the other lawyers of the Division and will collaborate with all other Divisions in the Legal Department - Operations, depending on the project

Accountabilities

  • Manage contacts and negotiations concerning the EIB operations handled by the Division, both within and outside the EU, working with documents subject to numerous jurisdictions and with counterparts in many countries (and internal counterparts in many different areas of the Bank)
  • Contribute to the development of the legal aspects of EIB policy on equity investments, developing and sharing know-how on the topic and liaising with other IFIs in relevant areas
  • Handle negotiations and legal documentation for LGTT (Loan Guarantee Instrument for Trans-European Transport Network Projects) operations, in restructuring assignments, as well as other operations undertaken by the Bank and involving the existing stock of loans or legal rights
  • Contribute to the development of new products or new forms of credit enhancement implemented by the Bank, and to the implementation of innovative financial instruments in the context of the 2020 Strategy
  • Take on, when required, responsibility for legal matters of lending projects (including the negotiations and administrative formalities) when the lending operation includes new or innovative features, with a particular view for the safeguard of the Bank’s rights and interests
  • Undertake research for and conduct legal studies on problems of law arising in connection with the Bank's operations and in the context of developing new financial instruments
  • Liaise where necessary with external consultants and supervise their work

Qualifications

  • University degree in Law and/or equivalent professional legal qualification
  • A qualification or professional experience in both Common Law and Civil Law would be a distinct advantage
  • At least 3 to 5 years of relevant, professional post-qualification experience in the field of Banking Law, Company Law, loan restructuring and Insolvency Law and/or structured finance
  • Significant experience in the drafting and negotiation of finance documentation
  • Very good knowledge of the standard computer tools
  • Very good knowledge of English and/or French and a good command of the other (*). Knowledge of other EU languages would be an advantage

(*) There may be certain flexibility on this requirement, but limited to particularly suitable candidates who may not yet be proficient in one of the two languages. If selected, such candidates will be hired on the condition that they build up rapidly knowledge of the relevant language and accept that their future career in the EIB may be subject to the attainment of sufficient proficiency in both of the Bank’s working languages
