King’s College London is seeking to appoint an outstanding legal scholar with a proven record of successful senior academic leadership as Dean of The Dickson Poon School of Law.

A research-led university based in the heart of London, King’s College London is one of the top 30 universities in the world (2012/13 QS World University Rankings), the Sunday Times ‘UK University of the Year 2010/11’, and the fourth oldest in England. King’s has an outstanding reputation for providing world-class teaching and cutting-edge research, with over 24,500 students from 150 countries and approximately 6,100 employees. It is in the top seven UK universities for research earnings, with an overall annual income of around £525 million.

The Dickson Poon School of Law is housed in the newly refurbished Somerset House East Wing on the College’s Strand Campus, a few minutes’ walk from the Royal Courts of Justice and Inns of Court, midway between Westminster and the City of London. It ranks in the top 20 Law Schools globally (2011/12 QS World University Rankings). The School is in the first year of a £40m (c US $60m) transformation project, funded in part by a gift of £20m from Mr Dickson Poon. This transformation will involve recruiting Chairs and lectureships, and offering enhanced student scholarships, seminars and international conferences. In the last academic year, the School had 56 academic staff and taught 2,232 graduate and undergraduate students across a range of programmes.

Candidates will excel in overseeing a period of transformational change, and will be able to demonstrate excellent ambassadorial skills, an international outlook, and a strategic disposition. Candidates will be persuasive and collaborative in style, and possess the ability to foster an environment in which the School’s research and teaching can flourish.

The Dean of the Dickson Poon School of Law has executive responsibility for managing the School and is accountable for it to the Vice-Principal (Arts & Sciences). The Dean sits as an ex officio member of the Academic Board and College Committee, and plays an important role in the management and governance of the College.
