Asia is home to more than 40% of the world’s income poor. Asia is also one of the most disaster prone areas of the world. Droughts, floods, cyclones, and earthquakes affect hundreds of millions of people each year. The frequency and intensity of weather related disasters is likely to increase with climate change, decreasing agricultural yield and productivity. Conflict related crises are also prevalent in parts of the region. Together, these disasters have put an even greater strain on the health and livelihood of an already vulnerable population. All Pressing issue you will help us overcome in this key programme role as the Asia Water Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Coordinator.
The role
The key function of this role is to support the development and delivery of country specific WASH strategies and programmes which involves humanitarian preparedness and response, Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR), development, and campaigning. Working closely with the Regional Humanitarian Coordinator, staff in-country and, of course, the communities themselves, you’ll ensure our WASH strategies make the biggest possible impact on the ground.
From a practical standpoint, that will involve coaching, mentoring and sharing your knowledge with colleagues in each of these countries, helping them bridge the gap between their current programmes and the positive impact everyone at Oxfam aspires to. On a more strategic level, it will mean making sure that approach is consistent across the region and aligned with Oxfam’s broader objectives. While a part of the Oxfam Regional Centre in Bangkok, this post will be based in one of Asia country offices.
What we’re looking for
To rise to this challenge, you’ll need experience leading large scale operational responses across a number of humanitarian contexts. A real understanding of the work we do in alignment with WASH and EFSL is vital. As is a clear understanding of gender issues in a humanitarian context. And because you’ll be dealing with a wide range of donors, Oxfam members and government officials – not to mention leading, motivating and supporting teams – your networking, influencing and people management skills must be second to none. The nature of the role means you’ll often have to travel across the region in changeable situations. But no matter the pressure you’re under, you’ll stay patient, professional and sensitive to cultural and gender differences, representing Oxfam to the best of your ability.
