SENIOR RESEARCH FELLOW FOR ARMY DATA HEALTH ANALYSIS

The Positive Psychology Center at the University of Pennsylvania seeks a Senior Research Fellow to begin fall 2012, for one to four years with potential for employment on other projects in the future. The fellow will play a central role on a large new grant on Positive Health among Army Soldiers - exploring on a large scale the influence of psychological and physical health assets on illness, health care utilization and health care expenditure.

Specifically, the fellow will serve as primary link between the grant's senior scientists and the U.S. Army's Research Facilitation Team (RFT). The fellow will develop expert knowledge on data elements and the database (PDE: Person-Event Data Environment) to support the data analysts and senior scientists. The PDE is a massive database that presents many data analysis and publication opportunities, including hundreds of psychological, health, and performance variables on over one million Army soldiers.

The fellow will help the data analysts operationalize the strategic goals into actionable lines of data analysis, refine research questions based on the constraints of the PDE, harvest required data, assist in preparing data for analysis, and ensure the analysts work within established rules set by the Army Analytics Group (AAG) and the Army's Chief Information Officer (CIO). The fellow will also serve as a secondary data analyst for the team, and as a secondary technical writer, preparing manuscripts for publication. The fellow will assist the RFT Director in communicating the team's successes to the broader Army community, and keep the RFT Director apprised of advances made by the team.

The fellow will work with grant senior scientists including Dr. Martin E.P. Seligman (PI), Dr. Rhonda Cornum (co-PI), Dr. Laura Kubzansky, Dr. Christopher Peterson, Dr. Laurence Steinberg and Dr. Darwin Labarthe.

Experience with large-scale data sets using advanced statistics, as well as an understanding of the interface between mental and physical health is required. Individuals with a Ph.D. in psychology, health and human development, social epidemiology, or a related field are encouraged to apply. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis. The fellow will work in Monterey, CA and travel to the sites of the data analysis teams.
