Assistant Director for Research , University of Notre Dame Haiti Program

The University of Notre Dame Haiti Program is seeking a qualified candidate to assist in the coordination of ongoing research projects the program is conducting jointly with the Haitian government and other partners. Founded in 1993, the University of Notre Dame Haiti Program is active in eliminating Lymphatic Filariasis (LF) in Haiti by 2020. With facilities located in Leogane, Haiti and a partnership with St. Croix Hospital in Leogane, NDHP is uniquely positioned to conduct research related to LF elimination as well as the control and elimination of other Neglected Tropical Diseases. The successful applicant will work on research initiatives related to the elimination of LF and in accordance with program goals established by the Principal Investigator, Fr. Thomas Streit, CSC, PhD. The Assistant Director for Research (ADR) of Hopital Ste. Croix would manage a sentinel site research project that NDHP has developed to examine the effectiveness of fortified salt and bed net usage in reducing vector borne disease incidence. Furthermore, the successful applicant would assist the Medical Director as needed. Duties may include designing and completing a Transmission Assessment Study (TAS) as recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO), and providing logistical and administrative support for Mass Drug Administration (MDA) in Haiti.

Applicants should have education and experience in tropical disease research, public health and / or clinical work, be competent in networking with a variety of co-workers and constituencies, and be able to successfully work in a developing country. The ability to communicate in French or Haitian Creole is desirable. Experience in grant writing and publishing desired. Initial placement will be for a minimum of one year. Senior level or graduating students might find this an enriching experience prior to continued studies and / or entering the work force. Interested clinicians may find this an interesting and challenging sabbatical, and a first-hand introduction to tropical clinical and research activities. Creation of peer-reviewed publications and a collaborative work ethic are especially helpful.
