Desk Officer United Kingdom Joint Delegation to NATO

A vacancy is available for a full-time Desk Officer to work in the UK Delegation to NATO (UKDEL). The initial duties will be as a Desk Officer in the Capabilities Team.

We are looking for a professional and motivated officer to play an important role in delivering the UK Government’s defence capability and policy objectives through NATO. Reporting to the First Secretary (Defence Planning & Capabilities) in a busy 8-strong team you will work on NATO’s Smart Defence agenda to develop key capabilities the Alliance requires, defence and security sector reform with NATO’s Partners, and other capability-related issues. You will represent the UK in meetings with other Allies, and with the International and International Military Staff. You will advise and take instructions from the Ministry of Defence in London, and advise the UK Permanent and Military Representatives to NATO. INDICATIVE MAIN ROLE

  • In the NATO Conference of National Armaments Directors, supporting the UKDEL National Armament Director’s Representative (NADREP, who supports the Chief of Defence Materiel in the UK Ministry of Defence) to develop NATO’s Smart Defence agenda in line with UK objectives, including the preparation of twice yearly high level meetings of the CNAD in Brussels;
  • UK representative leading policy development for NATO partner nation defence planning/reform. Working closely with the UKDEL Political team and UK Government contacts formulate UK policy on partner nation defence planning/reform, ensuring it is consistent with UK objectives for wider NATO and bilateral issues;
  • UK representative leading policy development for NATO Partnership Trust Funds in line with UK policy objectives. Monitor and steer Trust Funds where the UK has a leading role, including those dealing with corruption and good governance, small arms and light weapons and de-mining. Manage financial contributions from UK Government project funds;
  • UK representative leading policy development for the NATO Science for Peace & Security (SPS) programme. Working closely with the UKDEL Political and Resources teams and UK Government contacts, help formulate UK policy, ensuring it is consistent with UK objectives for wider NATO issues;
  • Policy lead in UKDEL for Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) Defence. Supporting the UK Ministry of Defence in monitoring, and where necessary shaping, Defence-related aspects of NATO’s CBRN capability;
  • As required, support other cross-team working in UKDEL working with Resources Team on UK industry (the NATO Industrial Advisory Group) and leading on Capabilities aspects of UKDEL’s public diplomacy strategy.

SKILLS REQUIRED

Essential

  • Policy development skills, ideally in a political-military environment;
  • Experience of working with a wide network of contacts demonstrating influencing skills;
  • Ability to grasp complex issues quickly and communicate them effectively, including to senior interlocutors;
  • Ability to work in a team;
  • Good organisational and managerial skills;
  • Adaptability under pressure;
  • The job holder will occasionally be required to work extended hours during peak periods, including in the run-up to Ministerial meetings and Summits and to travel internationally for short periods;
  • Fluent written and spoken English;
  • Good IT skills, preferably experience of Outlook, Word and PowerPoint.

Desirable

  • Knowledge of NATO and UK Government institutions and procedures.

You will work in the UK Delegation to NATO, on the NATO campus in Evere: a truly international setting, with 28 Allies, many partner nations, and the International civilian and Military Staffs. On site are staff restaurants, a staff centre, and excellent sports facilities.

This position will be subject to satisfactory completion of UK security checks, and will be filled on a fixed term contract.

Gross Monthly Salary: € 2736.57
