Africare Communications & Media Fall Internship 2012

Title: Communications & Media Intern Area: Headquarters, Washington D.C. Dept.: Global Communications & Media Department Status: One unpaid internship with a minimum commitment of 8 weeks. Credit: Academic credit is available. Location: Washington, D.C. Reports to: Director, Global Communications & Media

DESCRIPTION: Africare seeks a communications & media intern with a working knowledge of humanitarian and developmental aid to join our team. Graduate students are preferred, or undergraduates in their senior year are encouraged to apply for this position.

DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES: • Researching analysis and vetting of communications and media opportunities and requests and media hits. • Maintaining an updated pipeline of communications requests, pitches, and pending and completed media opportunities. • Editing, proofreading and fact checking content for departmental reports, website content and publications. Assisting with management and execution of events, with special attention to diplomatic protocol. • Other duties as assigned.

NECESSARY QUALIFICATIONS and SKILLS: • Familiarity with both AP and Chicago Manual stylebooks. • Exceptional attention to detail and strong ability to meet deadlines.
• Solid academic writing skills with versatility in tone for media, marketing and professional correspondence. • Strong organizational, and computer skills that include a working knowledge of Microsoft Office. • Ability to work independently, take initiative, and exercise reasonable judgment. • A commitment to Africare’s mission and vision. • Available to work at events, sometimes, but not often, after 5 p.m.

RECOMMENDED QUALIFICATIONS and SKILLS: • Journalism courses and experience writing in student publications or other print and telecommunications media. • Knowledge of issues affecting Africa, humanitarian and development assistance or interest in gender and development and international policy, advocacy and/or communications.

Compensation: Internships at Africare are currently unpaid; however, academic credit is available.
