Geotechnical Engineer AngloGold Ashanti

AngloGold Ashanti (AGA) is the world's third largest gold producer with 20 operations in 10 countries on four continents. AGA employs over 62,000 people globally. In Australia, AGA operates the Sunrise Dam Gold Mine and is developing the Tropicana Gold Mine in which it has a 70% interest and is manager. Independence Group NL holds the remaining 30%. The Sunrise Dam and Tropicana operations are both situated in WA.

Tropicana represents the most significant Australian gold discovery of the last decade. The new, large scale open pit gold mining operation will produce 3.45 million ounces over a 10 year mine life (approved project). Construction began in 2011 and first gold is anticipated in the December quarter of 2013.

We are now seeking an experienced Geotechnical Engineer to join our Mining Team at the Tropicana Gold Mine.

Accountable to the Mining Manager, this role is responsible for coordinating and aligning all geotechnical aspects of the open pit operation: including geotechnical and monitoring data collection, evaluation & interpretation of geotechnical data, advising mine planning and production team members. This role provides a rare opportunity to be a part of a Greenfields construction phase team at a large open-pit Gold Mine from the ground up. The opportunity enables the successful candidate to initiate and implement geotechnical systems and procedures according to industry best practices and technologies. This role is based at Tropicana Gold Mine on an 8/6 FIFO roster from Perth.

The main tasks of the role include but are not limited to:

  • Provide meaningful input and revisions to the Ground Control Management Plan.
  • Timely validation and interpretation of geological/structural deformation, through ongoing data collection and evaluation.
  • Maintain the site geotechnical monitoring systems including the ground and slope monitoring databases.
  • Carry out stability analysis of excavations and analysis of designs through kinematics, empirical and numerical techniques
  • Support completion of monthly and ad hoc reports on data gathering, evaluation, designs, monitoring and geotechnical performance.
  • Implement geotechnical drill programs
  • Review and communicate work practices to reduce the risk of injury from geotechnical hazards and monitor that all work activities and plans comply with relevant regulations
  • Regular mapping of pit surfaces including the use of I-Site and photogrammetry data
  • Mine/waste landform designs and as-built are examined and validated for stability and geotechnical risk
  • Accurately interpolate geological/structural deformation
  • Coordinate routine inspections and report all significant ground related incidents, including leading investigations into slope failures.
  • Liaison with Mining Department, Mine Planning team, Mine Geology Department and Macmahon regularly.
  • Coordinate the use of consultants for geotechnical design and review, and manage geotechnical contractors on site
  • Plan work activities for technicians to acquire geotechnical data

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • Degree in geology, geotechnical, civil or mining engineering, preferably geotechnical engineering
  • 2 or more years' experience in a geotechnical focused role
  • Desire to progress their career through post graduate education
  • Exposure to specialised geotechnical software/hardware applications
  • Technical knowledge focus on structural geology and slope/rock mechanics
  • Exposure to drill hole data base systems such as Datashed and Acquire
  • Commitment to safety, quality and teamwork
  • Good written and verbal skills
