Senior Program Officer, People & Conservation

World Wildlife Fund (WWF), the world’s leading conservation organization, seeks a Senior Program Officer for Rights & Governance. Under the supervision of the Senior Director, People and Conservation, the Senior Program Officer is responsible for promoting and supporting integration of social safeguards and community-based approaches to conservation including through direct support to priority WWF initiatives and projects. He/she serves as a technical resource to WWF-US on social safeguards and community conservation issues. Manages partnerships, communication and fundraising activities to support program goals.
Major Duties & Responsibilities
1.Participates as a member of the People and Conservation team to develop and promote strategies for scaling up community-based conservation, with a particular focus on community rights and governance issues.
2.Supports mainstreaming and monitoring of WWF social policies (indigenous peoples, human rights, gender, poverty) and WWF’s role in the Conservation Initiative on Human Rights consortium. Ensures application of WWF social safeguards in large projects such as those funded by USAID and GEF.
3.Works in collaboration with WWF’s Forest and Climate initiative to provide advice and support on social safeguards and benefit issues in Reduced Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation (REDD+) policy and programs.
4.Advises and provides technical support to WWF-US Priority Place programs on social safeguards, community-based natural resource management and related issues.
5.Identifies potential donors, and develops and implements fundraising strategies for the above program of work.
6.Develops and maintains knowledge resources, and communicates WWF’s work on social safeguards, rights and governance issues to external and internal audiences.
Minimum Requirements
Education/Experience: All of the following requirements must be met
1.A Masters’ degree plus 5 years related work experience, or a Bachelors’ degree plus 8 years related work experience
a. Degree in the Social Sciences, International Development, Environmental/Conservation Policy or related field.
b. Work experience should focus on international social safeguards in conservation/development and/or community-based natural resource management - including specific experience with REDD+ - and demonstrate progressively more senior experience over time.
Skills and Abilities: All of the following requirements must be met
•Ability to develop and drive new ideas and approaches
•Strong oral and interpersonal communication skills, including the ability to engage major stakeholders in a sophisticated policy dialogue
•Excellent writing skills in English
•Ability to work in a multicultural and multidisciplinary context
Preferred skills and experience:
•Fluency in Spanish and/or French strongly preferred
•Specific experience applying social safeguards in project design and implementation
This position is currently a one-year position, with the possibility of extension.
