The Agricultural Research Council (ARC) is a Research and Development Institution of excellence in South Africa, which operates within the National System of Innovation. The ARC has a mandate for innovative and creative agricultural research, technology development and transfer aimed at the advancement of South African agriculture. Its operations are overseen by the ARC Council appointed by and accountable to the Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.

The ARC-Institutes for Agricultural Engineering (ARC-IAE) seeks to appoint an experienced and dynamic person to the following position in Silverton, Pretoria:

Junior Researcher
The successful candidate will support the Limpopo Challenge Programme for Water and Food (CPWF).

Key performance areas:

  • Participate in project planning and implementation of project activities within CPWF goals and objectives
  • Participate in report writing and day-to-day management of project activities
  • Conduct research, training, data analysis as well as technology transfer in the identified projects sites in Zimbabwe, Botswana and South Africa
  • Assist in compiling extension leaflets and managing project budgets.


Requirements:

  • An MSc/BSc degree in Agriculture or equivalent qualification
  • Preference will be given to applicants who are qualified Agricultural Engineers
  • 2-3 years’ relevant experience
  • A valid Code 08 (EB) driver’s licence, as frequent travelling forms part of the execution of the work
  • Computer literacy, with proficiency in the MS Office suite
  • Good communication skills (written and verbal).

The ARC-Infruitec-Nietvoorbij seeks to appoint experienced and dynamic persons to the following positions in Stellenbosch, Western Cape:

Facilities Manager

Key performance areas:

  • Undertake effective asset management through the alignment of asset management policies to ensure optimal asset utilisation, longevity, security and safety
  • Develop and implement policies, procedures as well as guidelines relevant to Property Management to achieve organisational excellence
  • Perform farm management and allocate facilities through the efficient and equitable management of the allocation of land, greenhouses, laboratories, associated labour and specialised field resource staff for the work to be conducted
  • Effectively manage the budget in line with PFMA guidelines
  • Identify redundant facilities and plan to use such to raise external income
  • Ensure compliance with the requirements of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and relevant regulations and that a culture of safety is engendered throughout the Institute
  • Develop asset maintenance management systems
  • Manage the fleet and all aspects related to transport for the Institute
  • Plan, budget for and manage maintenance and capital works, such as laboratories, offices and houses, and the letting of non-core facilities, such as stables and agricultural land
  • Supply mechanical services for the removal of animal and other waste, making of fire lanes, ground works and delivery of feeds
  • Ensure maintenance of heavy machinery, farm equipment and other equipment such as air-conditioners, graders, tractors and front-end diggers
  • Plan, direct and coordinate activities specific to facility project requirements and ensure thus that goals/objectives of projects are accomplished within prescribed timeframes and funding parameters
  • Manage staff
  • Ensure the security of employees and ARC properties.

Requirements:

  • A degree/National Diploma in Facility Management or related profession
  • A postgraduate qualification would be an advantage
  • Experience in/exposure to an agricultural facility and management of a medium-sized facility
  • A minimum of 5 years’ experience working in a Senior Management position, preferably in a research environment
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • A proven record of supervising staff at all levels.

Programme Manager: Viticulture

Key performance areas:

  • Be responsible for strategic planning, positioning and marketing of the programme in the wine, table and raisin grape industries and to potential new farmers
  • Manage the research, collections development and support services portfolios of the programme, which includes the maintenance of accepted scientific standards, leadership with regard to the various research activities and quality control of all scientific outputs
  • Ensure technology is transferred from the division to relevant target groups in an appropriate manner
  • Establish collaboration with other research organisations, locally as well as internationally
  • Be responsible for financial management of the programme budget
  • Generate and optimise sustainable external income from clients.
  • Manage human resources, including leadership, team building and personnel development, recruitment, capacity building, training, guidance, coaching, mentorship as well as mentoring students at national and international levels

Requirements:

  • A PhD degree in Viticulture or related field
  • 5 years’ post-PhD experience
  • Proven research and managerial track record
  • Training in Enology at tertiary level will be a strong recommendation
  • A valid Code EB driver’s licence
  • Computer literacy and proficiency in MS Office suite
  • Good communication skills (written and verbal).

The ARC-Roodeplaat (Vegetable and Ornamental Plant Institute) seeks to appoint an experienced and dynamic person to the following position at Roodeplaat, Pretoria:

Senior Researcher: Plant Breeding

Key performance areas:

  • Initiate, lead and manage plant breeding research projects with potential for increasing commercial and indigenous vegetable production
  • Develop project proposals in line with presidential imperatives, strategic goals and research themes of the ARC and source external income
  • Conduct research
  • Manage gene bank and other plant breeding and related projects
  • Compile quarterly, annual and ad hoc reports, and articles for publications in different popular and scientific journals/magazines
  • Collect, keep record and process data, including the use of relevant statistical packages
  • Provide leadership and mentoring of students, researchers, research technicians and assistants
  • Prepare and manage project budgets
  • Manage human resources to ensure efficient deployment and utilisation, setting of objectives, assessment and training
  • Disseminate technology through releasing and registering elite cultivars, scientific and popular publications, radio and TV talks, etc
  • Collaborate with national and international organisations.

Requirements:

  • PhD in Plant Breeding/Genetics or related discipline
  • Experience in Marker Assisted Selection
  • Experience in potato breeding will be an added advantage
  • Sound knowledge of and practical experience in field trials, cultivar evaluation and improvement, preferably on commercial or indigenous vegetables
  • Evidence of publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals and presentations at scientific conferences
  • Knowledge of computer spreadsheets, word processing and presentation software
  • Experience in the use of plant breeding-related statistical programs
  • Experience in personnel management
  • Experience in financial management
  • Experience in project management
  • Ability to organise, prioritise and work systematically
  • Experience in report writing and compiling presentations
  • Valid Code B (08) driver’s licence is essential.

Research Technician
Tuberculosis Laboratory

Key performance areas:
  • Prepare and process samples received in accordance with the laboratory’s standard operating procedures
  • Perform diagnostic tests and report results to the supervisor for final analysis and approval
  • Maintain results on Excel and other relevant programs
  • Perform diagnostic administrative tasks
  • Control stock
  • Assist in a variety of research projects
  • Assist in technical preparations (compilation of SOPs, calibrating and servicing of equipment, etc) necessary for the maintenance of the Quality Management System
  • Work as part of the team as well as independently
  • Handle customer queries.

Requirements:

  • A BSc degree (Microbiology) or National Diploma in Veterinary Technology
  • 1 year’s laboratory experience
  • Previous experience in an accredited laboratory would be an added advantage
  • Knowledge of general sample processing techniques and diagnostic tests, particularly tissue culture and ELISA
  • Computer literacy, with proficiency in the MS Office suite
  • Willingness to work overtime
  • Knowledge of Quality Assurance procedures and good laboratory practice
  • The ability to work in a biohazard laboratory.
