Post-Doctoral Researcher Recombinant Vaccine Development for Livestock

The Agricultural Research Council (ARC) is a Research and Development Institution of excellence in South Africa, which operates within the National System of Innovation. The ARC has a mandate for innovative and creative agricultural research, technology development and transfer aimed at the advancement of South African agriculture. Its operations are overseen by the ARC Council appointed by and accountable to the Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.

The ARC-Onderstepoort Veterinary Institute (ARC-OVI) seeks to appoint experienced and dynamic persons to the following positions at Onderstepoort, Pretoria.

Post-Doctoral Researcher
Recombinant Vaccine Development for Livestock

Key performance areas:

  • Be responsible for research activities on the development of live vectored vaccines used in the prevention of Rift Valley fever, lumpy skin disease, peste des petits ruminants and African swine fever (this will include project management and execution, and interaction with other researchers at OVI and abroad)
  • Write reports and scientific papers and present research findings at national and international conferences
  • Liaise with national and international collaborators
  • Manage the project budget and allocated funds and maintain housekeeping standards within the Programme.

Requirements:

  • A PhD in Virology, Microbiology, Genetics or Biochemistry or any equivalent biological/life science field
  • A strong background in molecular biology
  • Experience in cell culture techniques, virus propagation and recombinant DNA technologies
  • Prior post-doctoral experience in a research and development laboratory, together with project management, would be an advantage
  • Computer literacy
  • The ability to work independently
  • Good communication skills (written and verbal).
