East Africa Division Volunteer

Reports to: Associate Program Manager

Location: Washington, DC

Start Date: September or earlier

Job Duration: 3 months with potential to extend, 20 hours per week

I. TechnoServe Background:

TechnoServe is an international, non-profit economic development organization founded in 1968 out of a conviction that a vibrant private sector is an essential foundation for economic growth and poverty reduction. TechnoServe undertakes targeted, catalytic technical assistance and other programming to increase the competitiveness of entrepreneurs, businesses and industries that in-turn provide sustainable employment, inclusion of the poor and increased incomes. TechnoServe operates in 25 developing countries with over 1000 employees. A substantial portion of our work is in agriculture, enhancing farm productivity and commodity quality and addressing gaps in processing and other agribusiness capacities. Our programs increase smallholder access to new technologies, aggregation and storage mechanisms, markets, critical information and finance. TechnoServe also undertakes structured programs to identify and support high potential entrepreneurs in various sectors through leadership mentoring networks, formalization support, access to capital and development of sustainable business services such as accounting, finance, marketing and human resource management.

II. Position Description

The East Africa Division is seeking a highly motivated, dynamic individual who is passionate about international economic development to support a broad range of functions across the region. The East Africa (EA) Region consists of four full-country programs—Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda—with additional regional activities in Ethiopia. The EA Volunteer’s responsibilities may involve writing, editing, design, research, basic website development work, and other duties as assigned. Specific tasks might include: developing a website to promote knowledge sharing, write-ups about country programs or cross-cutting themes such as private-public partnerships or gender etc. This person will report to the Associate Program Manager.


III. Required Skills & Experience:

• Enthusiastic self-starter; proven ability to work independently
• Highly organized and able to juggle multiple tasks
• Excellent communication, editing and writing skills
• Polished skills in Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint and Word
• Basic understanding of website design
