General: The International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT) is an autonomous, non profit making, international scientific organization operating under the aegis of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR). More specifically its mission is:
To encourage, support and undertake activities to improve the productivity, profitability, and sustainability of maize and wheat systems in the interest of the resource poor in developing countries.

The position: The International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT) is recruiting a Research Assistant IV based in Addis Ababa, who will be a member of the CIMMYT team.

Main duties (Terms of Reference)

1. Research support responsibilities:

  • Conducts regular field visits to supervise data collection and follows-up with partners
  • Implement farm household, market and consumer surveys and collects and manages secondary data
  • Data entry, cleaning and management of survey data
  • Locates, assembles and analyzes secondary data relevant for socioeconomics and policy research in maize and wheat systems
  • Conducts econometric analysis of survey and other data using STATA or other standard statistical software
  • Assists in managing and updating existing socioeconomic databases on stakeholder contacts, changing livelihood strategies, poverty, markets, and maize and wheat productivity in different regions.

2. Project support responsibilities:

  • Conducts literature reviews and assists in preparing strategy documents, research reports and policy briefs to strengthen research and publication efforts
  • Participates in the development of communication materials to enhance the impact of strategic socioeconomics and policy research in different regions
  • Establishes and maintains contacts with collaborating organizations and partners
  • Assists in organizing project and stakeholders meetings,
  • Develops work-plans and budgets for subcontractors and collaborators
  • Any other duties and miscellaneous tasks as required and as assigned from time to time.

Minimum requirements
Education:

  • MSc degree from a recognized university in agricultural economics or applied economics

Experience:

  • At least two years of demonstrated experience in:

(i) designs and implements surveys in rural settings (preferably household and market surveys); and
(ii) manages and analyses large socioeconomic datasets using standard statistical and econometric software (preferably SPSS and/or STATA).

Training: Agricultural economics; agricultural development economics; development economics; resource economics; econometrics; research methods; policy analysis

Duty Station: Addis Ababa

Grade: 2D level 3.

Minimum Base Salary: Birr 13,388

Terms of appointment: Initial appointment is (fixed term) for two years with the possibility of renewal appointment, contingent upon individual performance and the availability of funding.
