The Telecommunication Development Bureau (BDT) is responsible for the organization and coordination of the work of the Telecommunication Development Sector of the Union (the Union has three functional sectors: Standardization, Radiocommunication and Development) which deals mainly with development policies, strategies, programming, as well as technical cooperation activities (expert missions, training programmes, field projects, seminars, etc.).
Organization Unit:
Within the Telecommunication Development Bureau (BDT) of ITU, under the supervision of the Director, and in close collaboration with the other Departments of BDT, the Regional and Area Offices are responsible for proposing the operational policy and strategy of telecommunication development activities in their respective regions, coordinating with countries of the region to prioritize requirements, proposing inputs for the preparation of the operational plan based on these prioritized regional requirements, as well as coordinating and implementing technical cooperation activities in their respective regions, be they in the framework of projects, regional initiatives, or follow-up of World Telecommunication Development Conferences.
Duties / Responsibilities
Under the direct supervision of the Regional Director, the incumbent:
  • Drives the Regional Director, senior staff and high-ranking officials and visitors. Ensures provision of reliable and safe driving services. Meets senior staff, officials and visitors at the airport and assists, where necessary, with visa and customs formalities.
  • Assists in other basic administrative tasks, such as reconfirming flights; keeping up-to-date all records related to arrivals and departures, arrangements for visa and stay permit renewals, etc.
  • Delivers and collects mail, documents and other items, as required.
  • Ensures cost-savings through proper use of vehicle and accurate maintenance of daily vehicle logs, preparation of the vehicle maintenance plans and reports.
  • Ensures proper day-to-day maintenance of the assigned vehicle through timely minor repairs, arrangements for major repairs, timely changes of oil, checking of tyres, brakes and water levels, car washing, etc., in order to keep the vehicle clean and in good running condition at all times.
  • Ensures availability of all the required documents/supplies including vehicle insurance, vehicle registration, vehicle logs, office directory, map of the city/country, first-aid kit, and necessary spare parts in the assigned vehicle.
  • When necessary, provides translation of basic information from the local language into the official language for the head of the office and/or United Nations staff in the vehicle.
  • Where appropriate, schedules drivers and vehicles for use on a daily basis.
  • Assists office staff in filing, photocopying, faxing and maintaining stores as required. Assists in the mailing and distribution of newsletters and publications and arranges to pay office telephone and other bills.
  • Carries out any other related activities that may be required.
  • Qualifications required
    Education:
    Complete secondary education with a diploma OR complete equivalent technical studies with a diploma OR obligatory formal schooling plus two years of apprenticeship in the field of the post.
    Experience:
    At least two years of experience in the field of the post preferably in an international organization, embassy, or within the UN system with a safe driving record.
    Languages:
    Knowledge of one official language of the Union (Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian, Spanish) at an intermediate level. Knowledge of the local language, which is not an official language, at advanced level.
    Competencies:
  • Valid driver's license for bus and /or chauffeur free of driving violations.
  • Good knowledge of the city, local roads and conditions where the office is located.
  • Must have several years of work experience as a driver preferably in an international organization, embassy or United Nations system with a safe driving record.
  • Knowledge of driving rules and regulations, chauffeur protocol and courtesies.
  • Skills in minor vehicle repairs.

    Remuneration
    Annual Salary: (Net of Tax)
    454,360.- BAT - 741,790.- BAT without dependants
