Tea Specialist Consultant

Frank Management Consult Limited is urgently looking for qualified consultant to undertake an international assignment.
 
Duties & Responsibilities
 
Identify gaps and needs of Tea chain at small farm level (inputs use, production, harvesting and post-harvest practices),
 
Identify and use the appropriate techniques, extension services according to social-economic, cultural characteristics  of targeted  group and avail related methodology.
 
Set up the criteria for selection of participants into the tea ToT session,
 
Assist the selection and development of ToT groups, and then provide training to small farmers so as to fill the identified gaps.
 
Elaborate the strategy to set up a gap analysis in the tea production system in the sites of interest for the project,
 
Elaborate an adapted  training curriculum based on the problems identified through the gap analysis,
 
Prepare and carry out the training of trainers (ToT) and ensure that training will coincide in timely manner with Tea agricultural season cycle.
 
Develop an operational manual for ToT to be used during the training of farmers,
 
Elaborate FFS ToT module, methodology that includes a detailed training schedule, topics, techniques, practical exercises and necessary materials.
 
Practically provide the ToT training on a season long model covering FFS methodology, theoretical and practical concepts related to tea  production,
 
Prepare and avail training materials (handouts, equipment and inputs such as fertilizer, pesticide, sprayers, saws, pruning shears, watering cans…). Handouts should be prepared so that trainers could use them later for FFS farmers.
 
Assist the ToT trainees in the process of FFS groups’ formation and FFS implementation,
 
Organize activities of technical backstopping in all the FFS groups at a regular basis,
 
Develop a participatory Monitoring and Evaluation system to accompany the FFS implementation in tea production system,
 
Facilitate and avail the recommended Tea farm inputs, techniques and improve their distribution, related to different techniques with the desired quantity and quality.
 
Setting up the criteria and approach for identification of the gaps to be solved in the tea value chain (mainly production),
 
Guiding the selection of participants in the various ToT sessions related to tea,
 
Conducting different ToT sessions and follow-up of FFS trainings,
 
Developing a strategy for achieving targets in terms of ToT and FFS trainings ,
 
Familiarizing the ToT trainees to achievement of FFS activities and supervising the establishment of various FFS groups to improve the process of learning by doing in tea,
 
Setting up an M&E system suitable for the FFS activities carried out in the various tea production places
 
Outcome
  • A clear gay analysis highlighting the various problems hampering tea production in the areas of interest,
  • A successful ToT organization on a season long model for tea,
  • A rapid FFS implementation reaching the targeted figures of beneficiaries,
  • An acceptable Tea farm inputs  required and application,
  • An acceptable Tea techniques , implementation and dissemination,
  • An acceptable set of modules with a clear methodology including their implementation plan; feasibility respecting time frame of different activities period,
  • An acceptable  Tea good agricultural practices and its implementation,
  • Processing and quality improvement activities,
  • Good Tea cooperative management and marketing.
Qualifications and Experience
  • The consultant must have education in agricultural sciences and a long practical  experience estimated to be equivalent of over 10 years,
  • The FFS Master Trainers must have proved practical experience as Master Trainers in tea according to the proposed commodity for each Master Trainer
  • Practical experience in developing FFS and ToT activities in tea with a special focus on implementing appropriate agronomic practices for the tea commodity of interest.
  • Experience in improving old tea  plantations through the use of appropriate agronomic practices and expansion through the FFS approach,
  • Practical FFS and ToT experiences in tea  under African conditions or any other tropical region with similar conditions,
  • Conversant in English and/or French.
  • Prepared to stay and work in different tea producing areas
  • Ability to travel for long distances especially in rural areas.
  • Ability to practically demonstrate training activities in the field in front of trainees farmers by doing hands-on,
  • Expertise in touching the post-harvest issues related to tea ,
  • Experience in setting up IPM methods to control pests and diseases in tea.
  • At least 10 years’ experience in of conducting ToT and FFS implementation in perennial crops.
  • Proven experience in setting up and managing   farmer field schools systems for small farmers in rural areas of East African Countries will be an advantage.
  • Holder of Executive Training Management Certificate
  • Specialist must have education in agricultural sciences with over 10 years practical  experience in coffee nursery preparation to harvesting
  • The specialist must have proved practical experience as Master Trainers in coffee
  • Practical experience in developing framers field schools and ToT activities in coffee with a special focus on implementing appropriate agronomic practices for the commodity of interest coffee).
  • Experience in improving old coffee plantations through the use of appropriate agronomic practices and expansion through the FFS approach,
  • Practical framers field schools and ToT experiences in coffee under African conditions or any other tropical region with similar conditions,
  • Conversant in English and Swahili.
  • Ability to travel for long distances especially in rural areas.
  • Ability to practically demonstrate training activities in the field in front of trainees farmers by doing hands-on,
  • Expertise in touching the post-harvest issues related to coffee, proven experience in setting up and managing   farmer field schools systems for small farmers in rural areas of East African Countries will be an advantage.
