The Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, a foreign policy think tank with global operations, seeks a respected public policy expert to serve as Director of the Carnegie Middle East Center in Beirut, Lebanon (CMEC).  CMEC is committed to providing rigorous and balanced research and analysis of the political, economic and security transitions taking place in the Arab region, assisting emerging think tanks with efforts to build capacity, and deepening and expanding CMEC’s networks of scholars, policymakers, and stakeholders committed to addressing key challenges facing the Arab countries.  As the only think tank with a global network of regional centers, CMEC works with partners in Washington DC, Brussels, Moscow, and Beijing, as well as other regional and international partners to understand and analyze the rapidly evolving challenges in the Arab region and promote enlightened debate and discussion of policy options.
Reporting to the Washington, DC-based Vice President for Studies (Middle East Program), this position will be responsible for all facets of a successful regional center, including: overseeing all aspects of the CMEC research and capacity building work; leading and overseeing the recruitment of key scholars and staff; maintaining a climate which attracts and motivates a diverse staff of top quality people; collaborating with Vice President for Studies to develop and execute strategic plans; cultivating and securing project funding from foundation, corporate and individual donors; working closely with the Development Office to provide funders with timely reports and other required documentation; conceptualizing, developing and producing written reports, public events, and other activities to highlight analysis of regional developments and promote CMEC research; forging productive working relationships with other Carnegie centers and peer organizations; providing leadership in enhancing the communications, outreach and impact of the center; representing the Center as necessary in official or public policy forums; maintaining own program of research, op-eds and articles; and developing and managing the annual CMEC budget.
Successful candidates will have recognized expertise on the Arab region; a Ph.D. in a field relevant to public policy and a distinguished publication record; proven team leadership and/or project management experience; significant managerial, interpersonal, and organizational skills; demonstrated ability to work with persons of high stature; strong research, analytical, and writing skills; ability to communicate clearly and effectively, including strong presentation skills; extensive personal interaction with regional organizations, foundations, media, and the academic and think tank communities in the Arab world; fluency in Arabic and English with French desirable; proven fundraising experience desirable.
