Managing Associate, International Development Economics

Nathan Associates is seeking a Managing Associate to support our International Development Economics (IDE) practice from our home office in Arlington, Virginia. The successful candidate will come from the international development industry in either a for-profit or non-profit setting and will have expertise in functional areas including business development, project management, and technical consulting. A strong knowledge of private sector development is preferred. Applicants must be self-directed and demonstrate an aptitude to work in a team environment, both as a leader and team player.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Business Development (estimated 50% of effort) - Work with Unit Managing Directors and the Business Outreach Office to identify and pursue priority business development efforts. Participate in business development activities, including proposal preparation, as appropriate. (Most commonly this is as a drafter of technical proposal or as proposal director. Participate in marketing activities such as conferences and recon trips for business with priority clients including USAID, World Bank, and other donors.

  • Technical Work (estimated 30% of effort) –Perform technical consulting tasks including research and analysis, report writing, giving presentations, and training/capacity building to beneficiaries and counterparts of programs implemented by Nathan Associates and partners worldwide. Participate in firm-wide efforts to develop proprietary tools/methodologies for broader potential application.

  • Project Management (estimated 20% of effort) – In the capacity of project director and/or project support officer for designated long-term donor projects, manage complex projects (for clients or for internal purposes), including technical direction, staffing, contractual/subcontract oversight, budgeting, monitoring of progress, review/revision of final products. Support field offices in preparing terms of reference for technical assistance activities, including initiation of concept, technical design, and staffing.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Six to ten years of relevant work experience with donor-funded economic development projects.
  • Advanced degree in relevant field such as Economics, International Relations, or MBA.
  • Experience in participating and preferably leading USAID business development efforts;
  • Knowledge or experience in the field of Private Sector Development preferably in such thematic areas as value chain analysis, SME development and facilitation, trade and investment promotion, or trade facilitation.
  • Strong analytical and communication capabilities.
  • Excellent writing skills, which will be assessed during the hiring process.
  • Proficiency in French, Portuguese, or other language widely spoken in the developing world is preferred but not required.
  • Permanent U.S. work authorization required.
