Research Supervisor

The International Institute of Tropical Agriculture seeks suitable candidate for the position of Research Supervisor at the Institute’s Headquarters in Ibadan.

Duties

Successful candidate will among other things:

• Conduct virus indexing using ELISA- and PCR-based techniques;
• Conduct characterization of viruses using genomic-based methods;
• Carry out phenotyping plants for virus resistance;
• Conduct the maintenance and propagation of virus cultures;
• Participate in the field surveys;
• Participate in virus characterization;
• Carry out data management and analysis;
• Preparation of technical reports
• Support any other activities as assigned

Qualification and Experience

The ideal candidate must possess among others:

HND/BSc in Plant biology, biochemistry, pathology, biotechnology or closely related fields.

Basic knowledge in plant pathology and plant pathogen recognition (particularly viruses and fungi);

Good knowledge and experience in general lab management, staff supervision and lab safety (required)

Experience in isolation of viruses, bioassays, familiarity with diagnostic tests such as enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), polymerase chain reaction (PCR)

Experience in analytical lab skills, ability to prepare reports and archive data;

Experience in nucleic acid isolation and computational skills

Ability to work independently and assume responsibility for own work as well as being able to work as part of a team;

Good communication (oral and written in English; knowledge of French is an advantage) and computer-based skills;

Ability to work as a member of a multi-disciplinary team in a cross-cultural environment;

Provide guidance to students/staff and prepare technical reports for various end uses.
