The Internet Society Chief Executive Officer

ISOC invites candidates for this exceptional role who will demonstrate top level global service in the public and/or business sector, leadership in a multi-stakeholder environment, and familiarity with civil regulatory and business issues related to the Internet.
ISOC's mission is to promote the open development, evolution and use of the Internet for the benefit of everyone in the world. Through its 65,000 individual members and supporters, 90 Chapters, and 145+ organizational members, ISOC plays a unique global role in championing policies, promoting open standards and implementing a plethora of actions to realize its mission. ISOC is also the organizational home of the Internet Engineering Task Force, the Internet’s premier technical standards body.
With offices in Virginia (USA) and Geneva (CH) and staff around the globe, ISOC collaborates with a variety of partners from all societal and activity sectors to ensure their engagement in the continued evolution of one of the greatest tools of our time.
ISOC is a not-for-profit organization for whom transparency, consensus, creative thinking and inclusiveness are key, and whose policy is developed by the Board of Trustees with input from staff, members, chapters and the broader community.
The CEO reports to, and is a member of, the Board of Trustees.
The Role
  • Lead the design, agreement and implementation of actions and programmes in support of the strategic policy set with the Board of Trustees and Community
  • Provide inspired leadership and motivation to staff, members, and ISOC partners around the world
  • Ensure effective long-term financial and organizational stewardship of ISOC, upholding its unique mission and reputation
  • Deliver a significant personal impact as ISOC's primary representative in the Internet space and beyond
  • Be unswerving in driving for the open development and use of the Internet, by and for all
The Candidate
  • Track record of excellence in global leadership and coaching within major organizations, at the intersection of public and private interests, with strong relevance to the Internet
  • Familiarity and comfort with a multi-stakeholder universe, where consensus prevails over hierarchy
  • Enthusiasm for and commitment to ISOC’s mission and operating values
  • An outstanding communicator and advocate, who engenders trust and who shows integrity and courage
  • Strategic and integrative thinker, open to innovation, who sees the big and the small picture, and is streetwise and politically astute
  • Genuinely multicultural, connects effectively with different cultures, value systems and business models
