OXFAM PURPOSE: To work with others to overcome poverty and suffering.
 
JOB PURPOSE: Operating in an empowered culture, the Shop Manager leads a shop team in order to maximise the shop's financial contribution to overcoming poverty and suffering. By applying entrepreneurial skills and by putting the shop at the heart of the community, the postholder maximises sales by activity that enhances and never detracts from Oxfam's reputation.
 
REPORTING LINES:
Postholder reports to: Area Manager.
Reporting to this postholder: Deputy Shop Manager (where applicable) and Volunteers.
 
BUDGET RESPONSIBILITY: A defined Net Shop Contribution for a specified shop.




Key Responsibilities

People 
  • Recruit, train, manage and develop a shop team working within Oxfam's values to maximise shop income. Oxfam is totally committed to developing and maintaining 'diverse' shop teams.
  • Provide excellent customer service to Oxfam's customers.
  • Provide a safe environment that protects all people (shop and public) from harm.
Product 
  • Ensure that stock is correctly assessed and valued according to shop standards.
  • Ensure that appropriate stock is sourced to meet customer demand.
  • Ensure that the shop floor is merchandised according to prevailing shop standards. Promote 'New Products' in accordance with national standards.
  • Ensure that 'waste' is disposed of in accordance with Oxfam's policy.
  • Ensure that income from Gift Aid is maximised. Ensure all products sold in the shop are compliant with Trading Standards.
Pounds 
  • Implement Trading Division's accounting policies and banking procedures as laid out in the Shop Handbook.
  • To ensure that Oxfam's Purchasing Policy is adhered to by all shop team members.
  • To produce a business plan according to local Area guidelines.
  • To achieve annually set sales and costs targets.
Property
  • To report any maintenance issues to the Property Department.
  • To report any health and safety issues related to the fabric of the building to the Property Department.
  • To take all reasonable steps to protect Oxfam property from theft, damage or fire.
Communications
  • To keep the shop team up to date with business developments and plans for the shop.
  • To communicate Oxfam's beliefs, work and values to the shop team and the local community.

  2. Leadership - Ability to lead, recruit, train, develop and motivate shop teams to meet business objectives. 
  3. Making Teams work - Ability to manage a busy workload working in partnership with colleagues. Ability to maintain an environment that is safe from hazards and complies with health and safety legislation and Oxfam procedures.
  4. Applying commercial judgement - Use sales/space analysis, plan and monitor budgets, manage financial controls. 
  5. Exploiting business resources - sourcing, valuing and merchandising
  6. Developing Capability - Abilityto communicate Oxfam's purpose effectively to staff, volunteers, and the public.
  7. Thinking and problem solving - ability to plan, analyse and negotiate resolutions using initiative with advice when required.

  9. Basic I.T. skills - Ability to execute and develop simple IT processes. The relative importance of each skill and/or competency will be determined on a shop-by-shop basis.
