Ceramicist Haiti

Chemonics seeks a ceramicist for the USAID-funded Improved Cooking Technology Program based in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. The program is establishing a sustainable market for clean, efficient, and affordable cooking technologies in Haiti. We are looking for individuals who have a passion for making a difference in the lives of people around the world.

Responsibilities include:
  • Evaluate the overall ceramics production process in Haiti and provide technical advice on how to improve the process and quality of ceramics produced for assembly into clean cookstove combustion chambers
  • Improve each step in the liner production process and design an improved kiln blueprint, which manufacturers can use to improve output
  • Evaluate clay elasticity and mixing capacity, assess local clay extractors and artisans, evaluate transportation challenges, and recommend best source of clay extraction
  • Work with local clay workers to perfect kiln construction and operation practices and the recipe for mixing liner ingredients
Qualifications: 
  • Minimum seven years of experience working on household and institutional improved cookstoves
  • Extensive experience working with and improving stoves with clay ceramic liners or other clay parts  
  • Extensive experience with improved ovens and/or kilns
  • Extensive experience working with clay artisans and local stove producers to improve stove components
  • Minimum three years of experience working in French-speaking Africa or Haiti
  • Experience working with international donor-funded projects
  • Demonstrated leadership, versatility, and integrity
  • English and French fluency required
