Geographic Information Systems Specialist in the Cereal Systems Initiative for South Asia


We are seeking a dynamic, innovative, self-motivated, and service-orientated professional for the position of Geographic Information Systems Specialist in the Cereal Systems Initiative for South Asia (CSISA) project to lead on geo-spatial data aggregation, curation and analysis.
The successful applicant will join the multi-institutional and interdisciplinary team in India that coordinates the Cereal Systems Initiative for South Asia (‘CSISA’). For more information about CSISA, please visit the website: www.csisaportal.com
The position will be based in New Delhi but will interact with CIMMYT´s experimental stations and regional offices (country and world-wide) on a regular basis. Some travel within India but also to other countries in South Asia, may be required.
The main responsibilities of this position will be:
  • Manage geospatial databases and ensure the integration and geo-referencing of all project data.
  • Work with project partners to aggregate spatial data from external sources, including remotely-sensed information.
  • Conduct geo-spatial analysis in consultation with the CSISA science team.
  • Provide services on spatial analysis and mapping to the project team, including domain characterizations.
  • Train project staff in the fundamentals of geospatial analysis and software use.
We are seeking candidates with the following qualification, skills and attitudes:
  • MSc degree in the physical or biological sciences with an emphasis on spatial analysis.
  • 3-5 years professional experience.
  • Excellent working experience with ArcGIS, as well as with remote sensing packages e.g. ENVI, Erdas Imagine.
  • Broad knowledge of spatial data sets relevant to agriculture which are available in India and elsewhere in S. Asia.
  • Capacity and desire to work within a team framework among a group of multi-disciplinary and multi-national scientists.
  • Familiarity with agriculture systems.
  • Willingness and ability to learn new analytical techniques and software packages.  Good command of oral and written English.
