Job Summary

The Pediatrician works in the hospitals (district, provincial) to predominantly consult, examine, diagnose and treat newborn, infants and children, and to prescribe appropriate case management for premature newborns and low birth weight infants. She/he must have the qualification of MD doctor with postgraduate pediatric diploma. She/he assumes responsibility and accountability for their practice, applying up to date knowledge and skills in caring for each patient. He/she works as a member of a team that includes all staff of hospital.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Manage emergencies related to newborn such as; Asphyxia, Low birth weight, Prematurity and exchange transfusion as well as managing the pediatric ward (inpatient department).
• Oversee the neonatal ICU if available.
• Organize health workers activities in OPD & IPD for the pediatric section
• Monitor and supervise activities in the OPD and IPD.
• Advise and encourage mothers in aspects related to breast feeding, nutrition, immunization, hygiene and sanitation.
• Maintain a record of children with malnutrition and prescribe appropriate treatment.
• Counsel and educate the family in relevant areas of their children health.
• Obtain specialized assistance as necessary (consultation or referral)
• Share knowledge, skill and expertise with medical, midwifery and nursing students and all professional staff concerning their job requirements.
• Perform limited, select administrative duties such as patient charting, recording and reporting of data, clinic and/or facility management, or coordination of specific educational programs.
• Participate in research, professional organization and related committees and in continuing education opportunities.
• Follow established departmental policies, procedures and objectives; continuous quality improvement initiative; safety, environmental, and infection prevention standards.
• Participate in provision of 24-hour, six-day maternity service, which may require evening, night.
• Identify and report immediately any problem which interfere in the delivery of services or in achieving the program objectives to his/her immediate supervisor 
• Identify and report immediately any suspected epidemic cases.
• Participate in weekly meeting of health facility to share information and discuss the program progress.
• Assignment of any other task by the superior.

Qualification

• Medical doctor
• Have pediatric specialization certificate
• Fluent in Dari, Pashto, with working knowledge of English and Nuristani is preferable 
• At least 3 years experience with National or International Organizations 
• A willingness to learn new skills 
• Able to travel to other sites 
• Self motivated
• Good team work spirit
