Role Overview:
The Web Foundation was established in 2009 by Sir Tim Berners-Lee to defend and enhance the Web as a public good and a basic right. As the organisation enters an exciting growth phase, we are seeking exceptionally talented people to help us shape the future of the open Web. 
 
The Project Accountant will proactively work with programme managers to ensure up-to-date expense tracking and consistent reporting, primarily for 3 large donor-funded projects.   Perform day-to-day general bookkeeping activities and maintain the accounting database system.

Project budgeting & reporting
• Assist with preparation of monthly/quarterly project forecast and budget analysis
• Maintain systems to ensure effective monitoring of project spending and staff time tracking
• Support Programme Managers in preparing timely budgets and reports for donor-funded projects
• Follow up with programme managers to ensure required receipts, invoices and other documentation are on file
• Review and understand donor contract terms and financial policies and alert programme managers to any problems or issues (for ex. unallowable costs)
• On a regular basis, ensure that project reports are reviewed and checked for data quality. Work directly and promptly with programme managers to correct any inaccuracies.
• Maintain calendar of required financial report submissions for donors and sub-grantees

Financial management and accounting
• Perform accounting tasks such as entering bills, checks and payroll into accounting software; track and review accounts payable and receivables; calculate and record foreign exchange gains & losses;
• Prepare monthly bank reconciliations
• Post routine journal entries and assist with year-end closing process including general ledger review and adjustments
• Enter data into the project management and financial database system of the Foundation on a daily basis and ensure accuracy and completeness of data entered into the system
• Process and review invoices and travel and expense reports
• Maintain and analyze financial data and assist with preparation of financial reports
• Compile information for internal and external auditors, as required

• File documents on a regular basis and maintain an orderly filing system
• Assist with special projects as required
• Perform other accounting, financial, human resources or administrative tasks as may be required from time to time
• Ensure compliance with management, financial and operational policies and procedures of the Foundation

Person Specification
Education & Certifications
Bachelor's degree in accounting or other degree with Accounting major required
Essential Knowledge and Experience
    • Minimum 2 years of relevant experience in non-profit project accounting required
• Strong general book-keeping skills
• Experience with major accounting packages, preferably including Quickbooks, and with database management
• Good understanding of GAAP and accounting principles
• Advanced MS Excel and Word skills
• Excellent organizational, logistical and interpersonal skills
• Excellent oral and written communication skills
• Strong attention to detail and highly organized
• Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously
• Ability to work as part of a team and to work independently
• Proactive in recommending improvements to processes and procedures
• Fluency in English
Desirable Knowledge and Experience
       Knowledge of IRS 501(c)(3) compliance requirements
        Experience of financial management in global or multi-country organisations
         Experience managing reporting and financial requirements for federal government grants (USAID, DFID)
